Report

Report:After last week's debacle where it became apparent that the management can no longer afford to take holidays, all was back on track, after a day or two of furious horse trading to secure a full team sheet, as PL1 hosted Canterbury.

First up: London jnr v Brewer.
A fast and furious encounter. Both came out of the blocks fast and a tight 1st ended with John hitting the odd loose shot back at himself to concede points. This was a pattern that continued. Quality rallies interspersed with a few stroke losing mistakes. John seemed to be uncharacteristically disgruntled by this. The match ebbed and flowed along much the same lines until the 4th where John seemed to go off the boil to let Steve take the match. A good one to watch but it looked as though John wasn't ecstatically happy with the marker (me), even though he kept his counsel as usual.

Next door: Kennedy v Voyle.
Only caught a few snatches of this via peripheral vision, but it looked as though Gina was getting rather frustrated by her own inability to play the way she wanted. All games exhibited tight scores and if I had to guess I'd sway it was much the same sort of match as the author's (of which more later). A tight 3-0 to James to even up the match score.

Next up: London snr v Magor.
A month's worth of ring rust didn't seem to affect the author too badly, but it did seem inordinately difficult to get the ball away from Joe cutting it out early. Too many attempted lengths were left short and Joe missed few opportunities to bury it when invited. A few mistakes by Joe right at the death in the 1st and 3rd lent the scoreline a more respectable look, but the author was unable to finish off either of them after comebacks from 5-10 in each case.

Next door: Pratt v Harrison.
Didn't see a ball of this, but WW seems (thankfully) to have felt the need to redeem himself after last week (or not!) and apparently played well to capitalise on Duane's usual slow start. This time he kept the pedal down for 3 straight games to complete an impressive win and leave it all down to JEJ for the match.

Last on: Robbins v May.
This one went according to the classic JEJ script. I only caught it from 11-11 in the 3rd, and apparently missed a couple of houdini style escapes from match ball down as JEJ spent the 1st 2 3/4 games getting 12+ hours of coaching out of his system. Tom must have been cursing his luck at the end of the 3rd as by all accounts he did nothing wrong, with JEJ later admitting to being very fortunate to escape. After this point though you kind of always felt (having seen it so many times before) that JEJ was going to reel it in. So it proved although both 4th and 5th were hard fought.

So, in the end a win snuck and a start made in reclaiming all those penalty points!! As tradition seems to dictate, JEJ and the author were left to entertain the Canterbury troops in the bar afterwards.
