Report: | Despite Tunbridge Wells only being able to muster a 4-man bob for the trip to Dulwich, they still managed to give the table toppers a scare with a battling performance.
Fresh from his final spot in Manchester, Colin started brightly against Tim. Striking the ball well and covering more court than in previous encounters, the leaner & sharper version took the first and then to the consternation of the gallery edged the second. Clearly skating on thin ice, Tim upped the tempo in the third and managed to take that and the fourth to get back to parity but Colin wasn’t, quite, finished easing to 4-2 in the fifth before the Dulwich captain took the tie in five.
Meanwhile, Will was also under pressure. It will come as no surprise to followers of the Games that Jonny & Will went to five as well. With both players looking like they had just completed a cross-country skiing course the fifth was always going to be won by the last man standing and that man was Will to take rubber and the overall match.
Paul & Dean both came out of the starting gate at a frantic pace, but it was the latter who managed to hold on best to take the first. The second looked to be heading downhill for Paul as well but he saved three game balls to draw back level. A small lead in the third was short lived and Dean powdered his way the game in on hand before taking the fourth.
Last on Jim & Jolyon played out a thriller. The match ebbed and flowed, curling first one way and then the next. Jolyon looked to have secured a second win of the night when leading 2-1 and 10-7, but Jim hung in there and the Wise head on young shoulders saw him through 14-12 then 12-10 in a fifth that still looked in the balance.
So a 4-1 win for Dulwich, but a tough encounter probably not helped by the teams encounter with beer & sambucca in the delayed Xmas drinks on Saturday night. In fact, given the stories that have come out it somewhat a surprise that (a) it wasn’t the home team that was atleast a man down and (b) anyone had any rackets to play. However, Sochi life that a quality Olley’s fish and chips, some good chat with the oppo about what is the best tv series [Ed: The Wire; Spooks; Homeland etc] and the World was good again.
