Report: | Old adversaries Park Langley rolled in to the deep fat fryer that is fortress Giant Arches, looking to bloody the nose of the champions elect.
However, home captain Tim looked to have other ideas controlling the rallies early on and easing his way to 10/4 against Steve. However, Steve put in a rearguard action and slowly & patiently worked his way back to 9/10 before deft forehand drop saw Tim sneak it 11/9. Steve bounced back to take second by the same score-line and scampi’d into a 6/3 lead in the third. Some tough rallies ensued and it was Tim that just got the better of them to take a lead and ultimately the match by re-asserting some semblance of control in the fourth.
Meanwhile, Will was working hard to get ahead of James. Keeping the pace up paid dividends early on as Will forced his way into a 2/1 lead but James wasn’t done, and had him working hard to stay in the match let-alone make further in-roads. James levelled things up to 2-2 but Will had one last effort in him and surged to 8/4, however, at the point he had well and truly haddock and living up to his name JEJ edged home.
Jim has been in good form of late, so it was a much anticipated clash between him and Simon. Unfortunately, it turned out to be a bit of a damp squid with Simon never really getting going. The first was best forgotten, and easily done so, it was so quick. The next two were more competitive but it was a fairly comfortable win for the Dulwich man and tee’d things up nicely with just one more rubber needed to win the league.
Paul had dodged the Gina bullet when turning out for the 4ths earlier in year, but there was no plaice to hide this time. An enthralling battle ensued with some frantic fast paced rallies throughout. Gina was just managing to have the better of them to lead two nil, but after a pep talk from Will, Paul was back all guns blazing in the third managing to pull one back. The effort had clearly taken its toll and Gina closed out the match to level the tie.
When the chips are down what you need is an ex-World top 20 player and bang on cue up stepped Lauren to take on Clive in the decider. Lauren managed to start the batter in each of the games, but you cod not fault Clive’s commitment as he battled back each time reaching 9-9 in both second and third games. Each time the pace stepped up a notch, so much so that Lauren let out a screech of delight in getting to match ball in the third. She closed it out at the first attempt and the match and title was Dulwich’s for a second successive year.
Unfortunately, only the London’s stayed from the away side to enjoy Olley’s finest fare, with Steve's special request grilled fish getting envious eyes. However, there was plenty of laughter at the meal table much of it revolving around the team drinks as more titbits come to light.
Holy mackerel the season is nearly over.
Bring on the Cup!
