Report

Report:Last match of the season as PL1 entertained Bexley 2 yesterday. With the big local derby between teams 2 and 3 also taking place 1sts were shunted to the "alternate" courts.

First up: London snr v Breen.
With Jack called up relatively late in the proceedings this one got underway so he could disappear to work as soon as. A pretty slow start by the author as usual saw Jack racing off to a sizeable lead. A few mistakes then crept in and Jack seemed less than thrilled by a couple of marking (non) decisions, though general consensus from outside the court was that it was all above board. Nevertheless this seemed to achieve two things. (1) Jack lost the 1st game and (2) he looked highly motivated for the 2nd which he ran through in short order. The family coaching staff suggested a return to basics such as hitting a decent length a bit more often, and the author duly obliged. This made a massive difference and saw the author run out 3-1 winner.

Out in the sticks: Kennedy v Gantz.
Gina continued her impressive run of results out on the graveyard court. Didn't see any of it but she looks to have stamped her authority on the match early on and though the scorelines got closer as things progressed, Gina took a good win 3-0.

Back in civilisation: London jnr v Ford.
The usual result with these two. There's usually not much more than Rizzla paper in the scorelines in these encounters and so it proved again. Not quite in the normal manner though, with a strange mixture of sublime rallies and mistakes. Steve got off to a good start with Ben looking a bit jaded, but as it got into the 2nd Steve started to struggle with his footing. The rest of the match saw him slipping and sliding around all over the place as his movement tends to require a lot more heavy breaking than Ben's. Ben took the next two and then switched off a bit in the 4th to take it to a decider. The suggested change of selecting the short shorts a bit better had paid dividends in the 4th and Steve raced off to 5-1 in the 5th. At this point though, Ben did what he usually does in extremis and started to step up the pace and accuracy. This resulted in 9 points in a single hand and some massive frustration for Steve as Ben finished off the win.

Out in the sticks part 2: Pratt v Green.
Saw next to none of this due to marking. Steve didn't feel he'd really been playing that well (euphemism for a family audience). What I did see was the last two points where it appeared to be an attempt by both players to burst the ball. Never a good competition to engage Steve in! Anyway, win narrowly wrapped up in a tight 4th.

Last on: Mr Demotivator (Robbins) v Nisbet.
JEJ freely confessed he hardly knew what day of the week it was, and after starting the day on court in London at 6.20am I'm not surprised. Luckily for him Gary made a number of mistakes when comfortably in control of the rallies in the first game. Rather seesaw throughout with JEJ, as ever, doing just about enough to squeeze through, and looking a little irritated with proceedings in the 5th as Gary got the bit between his teeth and JEJ struggled to close it out.

And so, the end of another campaign. Not an awful lot to say about a mediocre kind of season. Onwards and upwards with any luck ...
