Report: | 1st up were Tom and Chris and this turned out to be a well matched pairing. Tom started off the sharper of the two with Chris hitting it hard down the back hand court but just as it seemed Tom was getting away Chris put a string of winning rally's and along with a few mistakes from Tom that enabled Chris to go 1 up. The 2nd went one way then the other with Tom leading early on then Chris went ahead then Tom then after a number of handouts at 5-5 Tom made a break and levelled things up at 1-1. The 3rd saw Tom playing a little more consistent and the points followed quite quickly and before long he had game point and then went 2-1 up. The 4th saw Tom again playing the better squash but just as it seemed he was about to close out the match at 6-1 up Chris started to concentrate more and Tom relaxed a little. Chris quickly got it back to 6-6 and at that point it looked like Chris would forge ahead but Tom then sneaked a couple to go match point up. Chris dug in and got things level at 8-8 at which point we expected Tom to call 1 but he went for 2 although it made no difference as Chris played the better squash and levelled things up at 2-2. The 5th was all about Chris and soon enough he had it won 3-2.
On the other court Greg was taking on Christo and although Greg started off well it was Christo who was soon moving ahead with numerous drops and boasts. Greg got within a couple of points towards the end of the game but Christo finished it off to go 1 up. The 2nd saw Greg working harder and on top all the way for the loss of just 1 point. The 3rd was very much the same as the 2nd and it was soon 2-1 to Greg. The 4th was a much tighter game and Christo was just managing to keep ahead until he got to 6 at which point Greg refused to let Christo have another point and it ended with a 3-1 win for Greg.
Back on court 3 Paddy was taking on Graham and this was frantic squash with some sublime touches here and there. The 1st was tight going one way then the other but just as Graham seemed to be heading for a win Paddy stepped in and swept up. The 2nd saw Paddy playing the more clinical squash and he was soon at game point despite a late surge from Graham - 2-0. The 3rd was back to the pattern of game 1 with Graham just sneaking ahead at the crucial point in the game but Paddy once again found the shots to get back ahead and take it 3-0.
On the other court Duncan was taking on Scott and Scott was the shaper of the two early on but at 4-1 up Duncan started to get into the game and he stopped leaking points. Despite a games worth of handouts Scott was unable to add to his tally and Duncan took it to go 1 up. The 2nd saw Duncan in charge but at 5-1 up it suddenly turned Scott's way and he put together a string of points which saw him at game point. Duncan dug in and got it back level and then took it to go 2 up. The 3rd was again a bit this way then the other with Duncan ahead then Scott then Duncan who made it count for a 3-0 win.
The final match saw Antonio and Ron both determined to get a win against an old foe. The 1st saw Antonio much the sharper of the two and Ron was struggling to keep up. Antonio raced away to a big lead and finished it off for the loss of just 2 points. The 2nd saw Ron in charge and his relentless ability to get to the ball and mistakes from Antonio saw the 1st game score reversed. The 3rd was a much closer game with Antonio just managing to keep ahead. With some slightly more accurate play Antonio managed to close the game out to go 2-1 up. The 4th was a tougher game and by now both players were having to dig hard to keep up with the other. Ron got an early lead on the board and although Antonio kept hitting back the rally's were very tiring on players. Ron just had enough to take this game and make it a 5 setter. Antonio was determined not to lose and he doubled his efforts in the 5th set and was soon building a lead that proved to much for Ron to recover from and so Antonio took a very competitive match 3-2 as the witching hour closed in. |
