Report: | No adverse weather conditions tonight to stop PL3 travelling to Dulwich so it was game on this time.
1st up were Greg and Stuart and both were a little rusty after the Xmas and New Year break. Stuart started better whilst Greg could not it seems put points on the board early on so it was 1 up to Stuart for the loss of just 1 point. The 2nd saw both still struggling to put points on the board but just as Stuart seemed to be making his slightly better play pay dividends Greg started to rid himself of a little rust. Stuart put a few in the tin and they were level at 5-5. Greg just about managed to keep ahead with some lengthy but unpredictable rallys mainly going his way and he levelled things up at 1-1. The 3rd was tight but Greg was just about playing the better squash with Stuart seeming to suffer a little more from the lengthy rallys. At 6-6 it could have gone either way but Greg just did enough to take it and go 2-1 up. The 4th saw Stuart stating the stronger and taking an early lead but then Greg seemed to find the WD40 and his play saw him run through to a clear 3-1 win.
2nd up were Dave and Kevin with Kevin sporting the latest styles in squash attire. Sorry who said that! Santa had once again misplaced Kevin's letter asking for a new pair of squash shorts but he did deliver new trainers and they worked very well as Kevin seemed quite fleet of foot. The 1st saw Dave starting the stronger as he had been itching to play all week and he took an early lead. Kevin pulled it back to 6-6 but Dave pushed through to go 1 up. The 2nd saw Dave again get ahead early on but Kevin started to play some nice touches whilst Dave miss fired occasionally and soon enough Kevin was closing in on the game. Dave got a couple of points late on but Kevin closed it out to level things up a 1-1. The 3rd saw Kevin puff out his chest in his 80's Yves Saint Laurent shirt (what happened Santa?) and he stormed off to a 6-0 lead with some clinical play. A few more rallys later and Kevin had game point. Dave then seemed to wake up and Kevin put a couple down so for a moment a comeback seemed possible but a tin by Dave and a good rally by Kevin and he went 2-1 up. The 4th saw Kevin pick up some easy points early on but then Dave worked harder and brought things back to 4-4. Kevin's deft touches were making Dave work harder and and it started to tell and Kevin ran out a clear winner with some good squash.
3rd up were Antonio and Georgina with both seemingly having played 10 gazillion times already this year! Antonio was determined not to suffer as he had done in the 1st half match but it was Georgina who started the better taking the 1st 3 points. Antonio was not having any of it and used power and strength to ensure that he forged ahead and took the 1st game without dropping another point. The squash was frantic at times but Antonio was keeping the pressure up and gradually built a lead in the 2nd only to see Georgina claw it back. At 6-5 it seemed that either player could be about to win the 2nd but Antonio just managed to keep getting the ball back enough to make it count. The 3rd saw Georgina once again go 3 up but Antonio had the bit between his teeth and was just not going to let Georgina have anything east tonight and he forged ahead again. Georgina added one more point but Antonio pushed on and closed the match out.with some solid play.
4th up were Paddy and Simon with what could have been a tricky match as in the 1st half it had been a 5 setter. It was a bit too and fro early on but Paddy was just a little tighter and picked up points more often than Simon. A few points late on made it closer but Paddy saw it out to go 1 up. The 2nd saw Paddy take more of a grip on the game and at 4-0 he was looking good but Simon turned it around with some tricky "old mans squash" at times and at 5-4 down he sensed a change in his fortunes but Paddy dug in and ground out the points to go 2 up, The 3rd saw the game get more competitive and Simon was giving as good as he got, Paddy put a few points together to take a lead but Simon pulled a few back to get almost level at 5-4. A succession of hand outs and some bumping in to one another saw Paddy stick one more point on the board and then he gradually pulled away to take it and win 3-0.
5th up were Duncan and Steve - both players were struggling a little to play their usual game. Duncan started off the better and although both were winning points it was Duncan winning more at each handout so he was first to get to 9. The 2nd saw Steve storm off to a 5-0 lead without too much in reply so maybe things were about to turn the other way. However Duncan then started concentrating and stopped the drift and and proceeded to win the 2nd without dropping another point - Steve was not happy. The 3rd saw Duncan gaining more control of things and he was soon 6-1 up and despite Steve getting another point it was soon 3-0 to Duncan.
PL3 deserved more for their efforts on the night as Dulwich ended up clear winners dropping just 2 points. Good luck to PL3 as it looks like they need to work hard to stay out of the relegation slots this time. |
