Report: | when I found out I was playing Dave the ringer :-) at 5 I knew PL had their best team out, so I promptly put a call into John Lane and Chris Butler who weren't available when first asked. A vain attempt and the result speaks for itself.
First on was Tom and Gina, after a tight 3-2 in Toms favour in the first half Tom was determined to be focused and he did so from the start with blistering lay hard drives which we're deep and tight. Gina really didn't get get into the match at all and anything loose Tom put away to take the first, avoiding the tin for a change. In the second Gina started a lot better keeping the score level at first but again Tom was a little too strong and pulled away, then there was an unfortunate collision and Tom's hip caught Gina in the lower back, neither at fault but Gina came off worse and rally wasn't in it after that. We hope Gina was ok this morning.
Richard v Kevin were the next on and Richard being unbeaten in their previous meetings he looked favourite, however, Kevin had different ideas. Richard did confess to being a little tired before going on and in the fifth this proved to be his downfall.
Stewart Gotts v Stuart was a real battle with SG starting slow and I felt that SG seemed a little off the pace going 4-0 down but with a little bit of determination got it back to take the first 9-4. The same could be said for the second with SM going 7-1 up only to loose it 9-7, 2-0 to SG. With SM regaining his composure and bring the match back to 2-2 it was on the 5th but SG was spent and was always down and chasing so SM took the win, great match.
Andy V Dave 'the ringer' Harris, we can guess what happened here eh! Dave hobbling around complaining about his ankles, his weight and his age, Andy got his violin out! However Andy was determined to have a go but Dave's experience at a slightly higher level proved too much not letting Andy play his game at all. Think I managed three volleys to the front not off the serve. Andy nearly nicked the 3rd but it wasn't to be. Dave's fan club were particularly sycophantic when Dave played a good shot to win a point, like he wasn't going to do that! Moreover we had a great game and both thoroughly enjoyed it.
Michel v Simon Their last encounter was not too enjoyable for Simon only achieving a few points and so Simon was not looking forward to this second encounter. Although fairing a little better it was business as usual for Michel who took the match 3-0.
Great fixture all round.
Man of the match goes to Stuart Melbourne, a great win. |
