Report

Report:PL visited Bexley still smarting from two heavy defeats thanks to the holiday season.

London senior having arrived back at the weekend and Whirlwind Pratt jetting back in from the states on the morning of the match were duly drafted in to bolster the side. Bexley even without Falla looked like a tall order - and so it proved.

First up was Badger v Pratt. This was a good match to watch (despite Matt's protestations that he was awful). Quite a few long hard rallies, but it soon became obvious that Matt hadn't ever played Steve before. His frustration levels gradually mounted when ball after ball kept coming back, and his racket strength was tested to the full. In the end Steve ran out a 3-2 winner despite losing big leads in the 4th & 5th.

On the next door court was Lewis v Gill. Robert carried his newly honed physique around the court to good effect in this one, playing his usual brand of accurately placed shots, and Matt whilst trying to do the right things was unable to follow up his recent good form, with far too many shots going into the tin. So 3-0 to Rob.

Next up Breen v Rich. This looked from the bit I saw to be a good match. Adam managed to move the ball around the court to pretty good effect making Jack do a lot of running. As the scores show though this was very tight particularly towards the end of the match. There was a lot of noise coming from next door when I went on, so it was keenly contested throughout. 3-2 to Adam.

Whilst this was going on, Yewlett v Patel was on the other court. Nilen is just starting to get back into it again, but a few too many lapses of concentration let him down throughout the match. Lee kept to his normal game mixing in decent lengths with some sweetly hit forehand volleys to ease through pretty comfortably. 3-0 to Lee.

So, not for the first time London senior v Steeden for the match. Mark won the first two comfortably, with Clive never really in it. At this point it became aparent that Adam had squeezed through 10-9 in the 5th on the next court, so Clive decided meek capitulation wasn't in order and that somewhat more strenuous efforts were required. Sneaking the 3rd 9-7 and running away with the 4th 9-1, it was all set up for the grand finale.

Mark stepped up the pace and stopped making mistakes, and took a deserved 6-1 and then 8-4 lead. Clive hung in hoping for Mark's (2-0 up but losing 3-2) nerves to become a factor. It nearly proved to be the case, but having battled back to 7-8 Clive produced a dire serve below the cut line to lose serve and promptly hit the next ball out of court.

Not the way PL would have liked it to go, but overall a move in the right direction. Holidays now out of the system, things will hopefully get back to winning ways. Bexley meanwhile continue their march up the table, with several clubs now in close contention for the top places.
