Report: | Well, it had to happen. After 2.5 seasons unbeaten, the Whirlwind was finally blown off course as PL entertained Amida on a sweltering evening at Langley Towers.
First up was aforesaid Whirlwind v Harrison. Steve obviously hadn't quite got the holiday out of his system, getting off to a horrible start, managing just two points in the first two games. In the 3rd his mistake level dropped dramatically with the tables turned to give Steve the game 9-1. Mike decided at this point to go back to what he had been doing best - keeping the ball in play, and proceeded to let Steve beat himself. So, altitude sickness prevailed for Steve to see him go down 3-1.
Meanwhile Rich v Seed was in progress on the other court. Apart from a hiccup at the end of the third, Adam controlled this game fairly comfortably easing through in 3.
Next on Gill v James. Having recovered his composure after a brief impersonation of Reggie Kray towards Mike (who appeared not the appreciate some of his marking decisions), mild mannered Matt proceeded to direct his attention to the matter in hand. Keen to make amends for his lapse of form against svelte Lewis last week, Matt played a consistent match against Paul. Taking early balls and keeping the mistake level low, he took the 1st and a 7-0 lead in the 2nd. Paul put in a spirited fightback at this point, and was somewhat unlucky to lose the 2nd. Normal service was resumed in the 3rd, for Matt to come through reasonably comfortably 3-0.
On the other court: Bonner v Lark. Didn't see much of this, but a tanned, fit(!) and suitably refreshed Andy battled through against Dan, the 3rd and 4th in particular being very tight. The heat of the court didn't exactly encourage winners, and it became something of a battle of attrition. Andy eventually eased through 3-1.
So, the last match on: London v "Mr Motivator" Grey. In a pattern very reminiscient of their first half match, Simon got into his stride quickly, racing off to 7-0 in the 1st. Clive then managed to claw some points back to get to 7-7 at which point yet another handbags at 2 paces session occurred. More frank exchanges of views ensued, and once again the London motivation levels were elevated to stratospheric proportions. He never seems to get the message does he ? Still, as far as the author was concerned it had the desired effect with the scorer only troubled by 3 more points from Simon.
All in all, a good return to winning ways for PL, and the Amida boys with so much energy left, four of them managed a game of doubles to round off the evening's proceedings.
