Report

Report:Prodigal son returns to guide PL to victory.

Fresh from his 7 week sojourn in the States, London jnr returned to inspire the PL team in their last match of the season. (Weak!?) BH turned up having already been crowned champions, and I have to say PB was considerably less unbearable about it than I expected. Getting used to glory I suppose.

Anyway, without further ado, and to save you all sitting on the edge of your seats any longer, on to the match:

London jnr v Mortimer.
This was a good game to watch (and mark). Steve, literally straight off the plane, put up a good fight (despite wrecking my squash shoes in the process), but found Toby's controlled hitting and direct lines to the ball(!) a bit much to cope with on the day. A lot of hard fought rallies, but despite herculean efforts, Steve was unable to keep the match going long enough to test the rollup-smoking (apparently) Toby's fitness levels. 3-0 to Toby.

Whirlwind v Lennox
Sadly, end of season ennui seems to have taken the wind out of the Whirlwind's sails since the end of his mighty unbeaten run. I didn't see this thanks to marking duties, but it has the look of a routine victory for PB. Not normally the best performer straight back off hols, Mark seems to have cruised through despite a blip in the 3rd. 3-1 to Mark.

London snr v McManus.
Battle rejoined for the umpteenth time between two (very) old adversaries. A typical London / McManus game really. Clive off to 8-0 in the 1st then winning 9-4, Gordon off to 8-0 in the 2nd winning 9-3, followed by the key game of the match. The 3rd was nip and tuck all through. Clive having got to 7-6 felt somewhat hard done by not to get a stroke for 8-6 but it turned out to be a blessing in disguise as several very hard rallies followed, with Clive eventually sneaking it 10-9.
Gordon was then heard morosely complaining about his tiredness. Having heard this a thousand times before, and seen countless comebacks from worse by Gordon, London snr was having none of it. This time it turned out to be true though, and Gordon wilted in the 4th. So, 3-1 to Clive.

Gill v Clarke.
Didn't see this one, but Matt appears from the scores to have controlled the match fairly comfortably against The Silver Fox. Obviously inspired by reading an earlier report descibing his East End gangland tendencies. 3-0 to Matt.

Bonner v Wanford.
So, at this stage we were all level, as the no.5s stepped on for the grand finale to the season. The game got off a strange start. Simon was being pressured from the off, but was digging everything out, forcing Andy to make yet another shot, and Andy would eventually go for a bit too much and tin it. Despite this pattern, Andy somewhat fortunately sneaked the 1st. The inestimable PL backroom team came to the rescue at this point, admonishing Andy for his tactics and advising somewhat more circumspect play from then onwards.
This advice was duly followed, and despite Simon's valiant attempts, Andy ran out a fairly comfortable winner of the next two games.

So, another season draws to a close, and BH are threatening to wheel in even more stars in the winter. It seems that everyone else is going to have to redouble their strenuous training regimes (i.e. go on court twice a week) in order to prevent BH's silverware cabinet from falling off the wall.
