Report: | PL visited Dulwich as one of the three teams scrabbling for the crumbs at Biggin Hill's table. With just two games left and mighty Hill claiming they are going to be weak for both of them due to hols, injuries etc it appeared that there was all to play for.
First on (as usual) was Armstrong v Pratt. Since the end of his long unbeaten run, the Whirlwind seems to resemble Marvin the paranoid android these days. Another subdued performance from Steve saw him struggling to contain Ian's powerful hitting. His cause wasn't assisted by a seeming inability to get the ball past his opponent, but after a dour battle Steve managed to ease himself through 3-1 before disappearing into the night (still without subs).
Next up, Garner v Harris. PL were a bit fortunate to have a supersub such as Dave to call on in their hour of need but it was always going to be a bridge too far for Dave. Tim played his usual brand of imperious squash, and Dave was dispatched 3-0 in pretty short order, despite a few dazzling nicks along the way (I know how you feel - except for the bit about nicks!).
Browsden v London snr next. This was a tough match. Two fairly contrasting styles. Will was doing a lot of running, but the ball kept on coming back. Whilst it was hot on court, the Dulwich courts always take a winner, and the retrieving was all down to Will's speed and fitness. Clive eased the 1st, but lost his way to go 3-8 down in the 2nd, before staging a comeback to lead 9-8. The was followed by a dead nick on the back wall, and Will wrapping up the 2nd. The final two games were both hard fought, but your intrepid correspondent just managed to do enough to wrap up a 3-1 win.
On the other court meanwhile was Winning v Rich. Didn't see any of this one, but after losing the first game Adam appears to have got it back together and done enough to ensure that Nick didn't live up to his name.
Last match on was Jackson v Bonner. Having returned to one of his (many) old stomping grounds, glimpses of the "old Bonner magic" were forthcoming in this game. This was quite an entertaining game to watch. Despite burying a few too many of the trademark backhand volley kills into the tin, Andy worked Mike around the court well. Tricky boasts from both parties mixed in with some good length made for a tight game. To the accompaniment of probably the most boring speech ever from one of the huge cricket contingent present (the speaker either knew his audience well, or thought everyone would like a blow by blow account of every member of the England cricket team), Andy eased through to wrap up a 3-0 victory.
So, with just the one match left against BH next week, PL did pretty much all they could to make it interesting. We look forward to the return of the highly committed Mr Gill next week (providing Palace aren't playing again)! |
