Report

Report:It seems to be true that however good a season Poultwood are having they cannot win away at Bromley Lawn Tennis!

Depleted slightly by not being able to call on Giles who was off farming and Herman who was recovering from self mutilation, Poultwood were glad to see that BLT were missing their number one. Maybe some hope of overturning the jinx.

First on at two were Jake and Martin – nominations would suggest that Keith Palmer was avoiding Jake, but Martin was definitely up for it and a slugging match ensued. Nether Jake nor Martin appear on the top twenty drop shot lists and the rallies were all about who could make the ball a funny shape. The first was all square until Jake found some line and length and a few monster kills. Martin responded with some errors and Jake was able to capitalise taking the game easily. Martin resumed with great resolve and Jake tried to play like an 1980’s Egyptian looking for unfeasible angles and dead nicks. Jake lacking talent, this tactic resulted in a big lead for Martin. Back to pace down the lines and the game was almost rescued. 10-9 to Martin though and match stood at one all. Back on plan for the third, Jake looked to be in control and the game was his 9-6. Trouble was Jake thought he was in control and Martin took the fourth just as easily 9-4. So all was set up for the fifth. It was impossible to tell who was less knackered. Jake managed somehow to pull out a 7-4 lead and then decided the job was done. Concentration went for a while and Martin played some good squash to pull level. The usual 5th game lottery ensued and the balls went Martin’s way. 10-9 in the fifth. A good clean competitive match throughout and well marked by Keith.

Nick Easton was shown no mercy by Paul Bromley on the other court. The reporter was not able to get a courtside ticket, but Paul tells me that he decided to show no mercy in closing out the game. Some respect for the youngsters potential then when a seasoned campaigner sees danger in mucking about.

Paul Higgs bought two rackets and a bad back with him this week. Again the reporter was denied access. In the post match interview Mr Higgs did comment that he was rubbish….. although he had a more colourful way of saying it. Ron Terry was the better player on the night, despite saying that he needed new rubber bands on his knee brace pre-match.

Terry Easton versus John McCue. If anywhere, this was going to be the tie that showed up the unavailability of a top 5 Poultwood player to play number 3. Someone was going to have a tough game. Terry probably doesn’t suffer many surprise losses. John looked good in places and definitely still has the game to trouble these players, but as he said himself, Terry was quicker to the ball and his shots showed quality. A good effort by John who didn’t give up and hopefully the Poultwood rota system won’t require him to play so high again.

Keith took on Paul at number 1. Paul looked easy in taking the first game but was unable to knock Keith out of his rhythm in the next three. After the game, Paul said that he was demotivated by Jake’s loss and the marker.

So it remains a tough place to play and the jinx continues. As usual the hospitality was excellent with strawberries and cream for pudding and top notch conversation. Also two blokes in the bar having a candlelit dinner…
