Report

Report:'PJ' takes one on the chin for Knole. In desperate need of a face transplant, Knole's veteran gave blood from the neck upwards for the team last night and got up again after a nine count to steal the points.

What to watch? England v Sweden or the Cannons Bull Run?

Well, there wasn't much of a crowd for the latter, so the two or three spectators had to do all of the marking and cheering while the players shuffled to the wide-screen TV.

Alan v Gary (3) - two wise old birds with quite a lot of skill between them. Alan has learnt to take adversity on the chin and smile; Gary has yet to learn. As a result of his bad temper, he won the match, but will have to do a week's community service as punishment (probably marking a game, so he can see what it is like to be abused off court).

Ted v Chris (1) - Lovely game to watch and mark. Old man Sayer against baby Ted half his age. But - give or take a couple of sulky bits - two potential gentlemen who could show their teammates a lot about anger management. The first game was about Ted showing Chris what he had got and Chris seeing how fit he wasn't after three weeks off. Chris just edged it and the next three games were less close and allowed Chris to take a breather in the fourth.

Ted showed fitness, stamina and a range of inventive shots - only a few more errors at the end than he would want.

Robert v Tom (4) - Tom no match for Robert's skill and accuracy. No reason for the tantrums though, Tom. A disciplinary tribunal (in absentia with Gary) before next week's selection meeting has been arranged.

Karen v Chris (5) - Chris stronger early on. He may have lost his momentum when he refused to go for a ball because there was a lady in the way - and refused to ask for a let for the same reason?! [This could explain Alan's curious marking call later on to 'PJ' - refusing a let because he 'played the man' - a new one on most of the Knole players; possibly a footballing term]. Chris pulled it back to 2-2 but had nothing left in the fifth.

Zeb v 'PJ' (2) - The decider. A real slugfest between bronzed muscleman Zeb and flabbygreyman 'PJ'. 'PJ' stole the first 10-8 and served to an apparently absent Zeb to take the second 9-0. Zeb came back on with new blue and red nylon racket and proceeded to slap the ball down for two games - cutting drives to die just in front of the 'T' with 'PJ' unable to pick them up from a yard away.

Zeb continued to slap in the fifth, but 'PJ' scrambled and dinked, while Zeb let a few errors creep in. At 7-5 down in the fifth, 'PJ' went down clutching his face. When he rolled over, blood was pouring down his neck from underneath his hands and the jugular was the most likely victim. Luckily, he was only pretending and had merely slit his chin. When the floor had been wiped clean and the chin plastered, 'PJ' staggered back on to accept 4 straight points and the match. It ended his own and Knole's three match losing streak; England drew and so a happy night was assured for football and boxing lovers alike.
