Report: | Bromley were looking for revenge from their first half defeat against Knole. The problem being their 3,4 and regular No 6 were missing. The good news for Bromley was that Knole were in ther same boat. However Bromley had manged to bring in new blood at 4&5 Dave V making his first appearance and Tom back from Uni. Both made an excellent start for Bromley Dave with a convincing win over Chris. Tom also had a very good start over John but John used all of his experience to capture the second and force Tom to dig deep for the 3rd and especially the 4th. Bromley's other ploy was to swop their 1&2 to try and unsettle Chris at 1 which nearly worked. Keith played really well to take the 1st fairly comfortably but Chris came back well to take the 2nd and 3rd. He also took an early lead and had several match balls in the 4th but Keith had the better staying power and wouldn't give up taking the 4th 10-8. So to the Final game and Chris had had enough of rallying and went for winners taking the 5th in style 9-2. In the other switch Ian took an early lead 2-0 winning both games 9-2. However PJ was not going to give up easily and fought back to take the 3rd 9-7 before succumbing in the 4th 9-6. Match to Bromley. Tubby Tel and Jel started before Ian and PJ but were still slugging it out long after their match had finished. The main reason for this was a long hard fought 1st game where Tubby broke one of his ancient rackets doing a cross court drive but managed to still play a drop shot winner to win the point, but not the game. Tubby had had enough of the rallying type of game and went for winners which worked well for two games but Jerry kept plugging away and took the 4th and 5th quite easily as Tubby wilted under the heat and Jerry's perserverance.
(ed. Great report Tel - Knole would just like to add that:
1) having eschewed order switching until now on ethical grounds, the gloves are now off! Look out Dave Harris, we are gunning for you with our best rabbit!
2) it was hot! JC had not trained for three weeks, anticipating a full squad. So, he was surprised to meet a one-legged Tom rather than his usual Peter M. A quick learner, John managed to claw Tom back with his old standby lob until the low-slung Bromley heaters caught him out. Leading 8-2 in the fourth, John had a rush of sweat to the brain and caved in.
3) BLTC have a curious triumvirate of views. Three different ideas about whether it is possible to get a stroke when facing the back wall! Three different ideas about how long an argument between veteran players on court and their own venerable team mates marking can last.
4) Pudding was great and totally unexpected. Bravissimo! )
