Report: | A severely weakened Dulwich 2 turned up last night at PL, but nevertheless made a spirited attempt to wrest the match from the home team.
First up: London jnr v Nicholson
Steve seemed to be just ticking along just enough in the 1st - until it wasn't enough as Will chased down everything and snuck it. It looked as though Will thought it was mission accomplished in the 2nd, but the 3rd and 4th saw much leaning on racket looking shattered followed by more chasing it down. A good showing by Will, but Steve easing through in 4.
Next door: Pratt v Steibelt
This was over in double quick time. Saw a minuscule amount via peripheral vision from marking next door, but Steve was in no mood to hang about, and powered through each game in no nonsense fashion to record a comfortable win.
Next up: Robbins v Harpur
Quite a competitive game this one. JEJ just back from his training camp (sorry, family holiday) had his nose in front in every game, but Gordon, despite a few mistakes competed bravely for each game, losing out at the business end of each.
Next door: Rich v Black
Adam had magnanimously stepped in fairly late in the piece, and arrived hotfoot in whistle, with the prospect of a 6am airport pick-up the next morning as he jets off to sunnier climes. Keen to get his money's worth though, this one went the distance, and from what I saw it looked to be nip and tuck all the way, with a few mistakes at the end of long rallies being the difference. A good effort, as Charlie fell over the finish line.
Last on: London snr v Dawes
I've deliberately saved the worst till last. The least said about this one the better. It was competitive all right, but that's about it. The author found Andy's style quite awkward to deal with, and after a massive mistake-fest, particularly in the 4th, decided that the only way to win was to bore his opponent to death by relentlessly hitting it straight to a length up and down the backhand wall - the only shot that was working. Still it did the trick. Brad Gilbert would have loved it.
The usual banter in the bar afterwards with Will regaling everyone with tales of his ineptitude with child car seats, and a fiendishly tricky quiz where the answer seemed to be that Paul Hunter once played for Leeds. Sounds like sunstroke, but a bit late ...
