Report

Report:You can’t beat a tight race that goes to the wire, and the Summer Priory was certainly tight with just 4 points separating three teams, two of which went head to head in Dulwich. Visitors Bromley had got pipped at the polls last year when losing to Bexley II in the last match of the summer, and as it turned out it was Bexley again who did them no favours in the run in, but more of that later.

Needing to win the match in order to even have a chance of the title, both teams arrived at Burbage Road full of beans. So much so that Sam & Matt were warming up and down courts 3 & 4 before a ball had even been struck in anger. Matt faced Paul in the battle of Britain, and after a fast furious first it was south of Hadrian’s Wall that had the first in the bag. However, the Scot wasn’t done and came roaring back to lead 8/5 and look like levelling things up. Matt steadied the ship and having edged the game eased home on three. 1-0 Bromley

Meanwhile Antonio and Sam’s match was unfolding in a similar fashion. 11/9, 11/8 to Sam and Dulwich new they were in trouble, but Antonio dug deep and fought his way back in to the match taking the third 11/9. However, the effort of covering every corner of his court constituency seemed to take its toll and Sam was able to regain control ultimately the match. 2-0 Bromley.

Dulwich’s own William Wallace faced a tall small order in Lewis, but was undaunted and played well to take the first. Lewis bounced back and it seemed as though Will’s campaign had run out of steam as he fell behind 2-1. However, roared on by his supporters he pulled back level sneaking the fourth and at 5-5 in the fifth it looked as though an upset might be possible. It wasn’t to be and Lewis got the job done in 5. 3-0 Bromley.

Across the way, Lauren battled with a James. Having shared 5 games in the winter it was always likely to be a close encounter and so it proved to be. However, Lauren managed to win the key points at the key times to win in 3. 3-1 Bromley.

Last up, Tim took on Neil. Playing with Freedom that can only be afforded when you know the match the title is long gone Tim recovered from as slow start in the first to pinch it, moved two ahead and then took his foot off the gas allowing Neil back in to take the 3rd. Normal service was resumed in the fourth. 3-2 Bromley.
So a tight looking contest on the scorecard, but in reality the Bromley boys were able to say YES they had done their bit. This was soon dashed with a NO, when seeing that Park Langley had beaten a depleted Bexley team to take the title. Congrats to them.

Following on from the disappointment, the talk turned to far more interesting topics. Well atleast, the upcoming voted kicked things off and then it deteriorated heading via one man’s hopes for independent Scottish blue movies to another man getting so excited by the thought of men in skirts he lost control of his pizza and ending up with Will clarifying that for him it is important keep things, one team but most importantly there should only ever be one pen…

Thanks to the White Hart in Tulse Hill for throwing their excellent pizzas in to the post match food options, the BCC lads for a classic battle & banter, and for sorting out that not only are we better together but its still healthy to have a bit of independence.
