Report: | Twas a tail of toe for Dulwich 3 tonight!
Dulwich 3 were decimated with absences tonight with the both 1st and 2nd string away the 4th string then decided to walk barefoot in the park at the weekend and ended up kicking a brick thus breaking a toe!
A makeshift Dulwich team tried their hardest and where competitive in most of the matches.
1st up where Thomas and Adam both sporting what looked to be footy strips. Thomas was belting the ball with all his might but it was Adam who started off better although Thomas was soon charging ahead so at 6-4 up the 1st game ws ripe for the taking. Adam however took the serve back and ran off a string of points to go 1 up. The 2nd followed a similar pattern but Thomas was playing with some sharp cross court drives that were catching Adam. Thomas was playing well and from 4-0 down fought back and went ahead then forced his way to game point at 8-5. Adam's experience kept him in touch and again another string of points saw him catch Thomas and go straight throw to go 2 up. The 3rd saw Thomas playing some cracking shots when not serving but he could not turn them into points so it was Adam gradually pulling ahead to a 5-0 lead. Thomas tried to get back into it but Adam saw the game out for 3-0 win.
Next up were Paul and Jack who at 12/13 seemed to be playing very naturally and is a very impressive youngster. Paul did his best to make it hard for Jack but Jack just seemed to have all the answers. The 1st saw Jack move quickly to a commanding lead and despite a few hand outs and a couple of points for Paul, Jack soon had it finished off to go 1 up, The 2nd again saw Jack marching off to a commanding lead but Paul had a bit more of the action in this one and at 6-4 down had a chance to test Jack out but unfortunately for Paul, Jack again passed the test to go 2 up. The 3rd followed a similar pattern to the 1st and Jack was quickly in charge although a few lengthy rallies tested his fitness but again he passed and soon had it won - he won't be playing at 5 for much longer it seems.
Next up were old foes Ian and Ray and this one often goes to 5 and so it came to pass. The 1st saw Ian taking an early lead but Ray kept in touch and then a string of winners on the forehand side brought it level at 5-5. Ian was forcing the pace and got a couple more points only for Ray to pull it back again but Ray made one or two mistakes which helped Ian secure the 1st. The 2nd was close all the way with 1st Ian ahead then Ray then stalemates at 3-3 and 4-4 and 5-5 so at 6-6 it was anyone's but this time it was Ray who closed it out to level things up. The 3rd was a tempestuous affair with numerous let calls by Ray annoying Ian. it followed a similar pattern to the 2nd with not very much in it most of the way until Ian got ahead from 5-5. Game point came and went then Ray brought it back to 8-7 down but Ian was not going to let it go any further and after a number of let calls he closed it out with a slam into the nick on the forehand side. The 4th was a much calmer affair and this enabled Ray to take control for the most part although it was still relatively tight until Ray managed to close it out to level things up and force a 5th set. The final set saw Ian rush off to an early 4-1 lead then 5-2 so at this point it seemed likely that Ian was going to take the match but then Ray put together a string of points to go straight through for a 3-2 win.
Next up where Tom and Mark and this was another close one with Tom playing numerous winning nicks throughout which had Mark struggling to compete at times. The 1st saw Tom start off solidly and Mark took a bit of time to get up to speed. It got tight towards the end but Tom had a lead and made that count to go 1 up. The 2nd was close early on but at 4-4 Mark found his chicken feet and clucked away with a string of points to take it and level things up at 1-1. The 3rd was all Mark and he was in full control dropping just 1 point. Mark looked to be heading towards a 3-1 win at 5-1 up in the 4th but Tom was not beaten just yet and he forced his way back into it with a string of winning rallys bringing things level at 7-7 then pushing past to notch up a 2nd game and make it a 5-setter. The 5th was close early on with neither player taking command but at 4-4 Mark stood firm on those chicken legs and went clucking point crazy to take it 3-2.
The final match was Alex and Andy and Alex had a solid start racing into an early lead which just got bigger as the game wore on so 1 up to Alex The 2nd saw Andy regain some composure and he managed to prevent Alex from scoring despite numerous handouts so 1-1 it was. The 3rd was even more convincing for Andy as he raced away winning point after point with little resistance from Alex. The 4th saw Alex start off positive taking an early lead but he just could not stop Andy from winning points and soon enough Andy was forging ahead again and onto another clear winning margin and the match.
With fish-n-chips on the menu for a change everyone tucked in biting away Suarez like along with a few beers. |
