Report

Report:The season opener saw a strengthened and merged Bexley visit PL who had their (relatively new) banker Steve P pull out on the day.

A long and closely contested match, but Bexley always had their noses in front, and despite a couple of gruelling 3-2s, it was a fair result.

First up: London snr v Green.
A close match which pretty much matched the statement above really. Matt hunted down every opportunity to volley that presented itself, and the author stayed hanging onto his coat tails all the way until the crucial end of game points sequence. Silly shot selection / mistakes cost yet again, but the scoreline doesn't really do it justice.

Next door: Robbins v Masters.
After the most extensive stretching / warm-up for JEJ in living memory, this one went on and on. It finished 3-1 to Brad, but the rallies were interminable. Steve L commented afterwards that at one point, one of the rallies lasted as long as 7 points on the London v Green match! A very lively ball on both courts contributed significantly to the length of all games. Didn't really see a huge amount of this game, but Brad's youth and mobility saw him through.

Next up: London jnr v Ford.
This one conformed to the well worn script between these two. Steve got off to a flyer, and up in the 2nd only to be pegged back by a flurry of accurate points from Ben sprinkled with a few mistakes from Steve. A very tight 3rd saw Steve sneak it at the death as Ben tinned a couple of simple shots. The last two games saw Ben displaying his usual arrays of shots, and Steve doing one hell of a lot of running. Mixed in with that running were a number of screaming nick shots as he vied not to be outdone on the shot making front. As ever though, Ben seemed to be doing less work, and despite prodigious efforts Steve's level eventually dropped off just a bit as he succumbed to tiredness. A very entertaining match.

Next door: Peel snr v Badger.
Didn't really see any of this, but it seems to have been nip and tuck. Steve said that it was there for the taking for Nick, assuming he played the right shots. Sadly there weren't quite enough of the right shots near the end. Nick felt somewhat disgruntled to have lost, but that seems like a pretty good showing to me.

Last on, face saving stuff from Peel jnr v Robjant.
A fairly scrappy encounter this one. Jack had the edge throughout, and took the 1st and 3rd games at a canter. The 2nd was different though as a large lead was clawed back by Louis. Jack just about did enough to hang on and take it, but needed the coaching staff to reinforce the message that mistakes and too many boasts and reverse angles were not the order of the day. Message received and understood as he proceeded to close it out.

Afterwards we all repaired to the temporary bar upstairs to avoid spoiling the nice new floor varnish downstairs. Just in time for last orders due to the late finish.
