Report

Report:A local derby between the 2nd and 3rd teams last night saw a good atmosphere and packed galleries as PL1 entertained Canterbury. Sadly (but understandably) most of it was directed on the other courts, but it made for a noisy evening. Both teams were at full strength, so a tough contest in a number of the ties.

First on: London jnr v Brewer
A good battle in the first two games, with Steve always having the upper hand, although John battled in his usual fashion. Entertaining stuff as both players covered a lot of court and produced some quality shot making. By the time the 3rd arrived, John looked to have either run out of ideas or puff, and Steve took his foot off the throttle somewhat. Still, it made no difference to the result, and PL were under way well.

Out on court 4: Pratt v Magor
Didn't see any of this due to marking duties, but Steve got into the driving seat and got himself 2-0 up and to match ball in the 3rd. At this point according to Steve's post match analysis his reserves were (expletive deleted). Joe made a good comeback to pouch the 3rd and 4th and Steve had just enough in the tank to see out a tight 5th.

Back in the noisy zone: London snr v Harrison
This was a very close fought match from start to finish. The author got going much more quickly than normal and got to 10-7 up in the first. Sadly, not able to close it out with a few loose cross courts giving it away despite 3 game balls. Another very tight game in the 2nd saw the scores levelled. The 3rd and 4th were one way traffic (3rd to Duane and 4th to the author). The 5th was neck and neck all the way through until the author did his usual end of game/match trick and served out at 8-8. Unfortunately PAR is pretty unforgiving towards this level of ineptitude, and a wrong footing straight push by Duane after the author narrowly missed a nick drop, followed by a blazing low cross court wrapped it up for Duane.

Out in the sticks again: Robbins v May
Didn't see a ball of this, but judging from the scoreline JEJ efficiently worked his way past Tom, unlike some of their earlier battles. The dodgy knee seemed to hold up well, and this clinched the match for PL.

Last on: Peel snr v Voyle
Fresh (not) from a beasting over the weekend, playing at no.1 for the Kent O45s, Nick was a little slow to get into this match. It looked fairly competitive for the first two games, although James was always in the driving seat, but the 3rd was a write off as Nick succumbed to a tight hamstring, leaving James to put some more points on the board for the visitors.

The usual lively bar session later saw more yarning about days of yore. Duane recounted the number of decent opponents he has got match ball up against before losing (plus his claim to fame in beating Jamie Davis), and his vomitory but racket winning exploits as a 12 year old against Abou Taleb. Steve P cranked up the volume control (surprise) to recount how he nearly chopped Richie Fallows (except he didn't - quite). JEJ trumped everyone in the "so who's the best player you ever played" stakes (Peter Nicol).

Just another verbose Tuesday night. A good time had by all ...
