Report

Report:Although its not quite an International fixture, it feels a little like it when the good folk of Canterbury venture in to town. There was no bunting in sight, but there were some early signs that the fixture was being taken seriously as both Will & Lauren re-gripped their rackets. Slightly worryingly neither followed the tried and trusted method of starting with the tapered end, even though in Lauren’s case the grip did actually say ‘Start’. However, possibly of more concern was the fact that Will also likes his grip to be set up for a left hander, despite his right handed dominance. In spite of all this, the Prince weapons were ready to put Canterbury to the sword.

Before they had even arrived there were rumours (spread by Antonio) that they had fudged their order so that Duane avoided Lauren. However, I was able to confirm that Tom was actually ill, so Duane just lucked out or had slipped something in Tom’s drink the week before. Nick soon discovered why Duane was so keen to dodge the Brigadier’s bullet as she eased through in 3. Across the way Tim & John were involved in fast and frantic rallies that, fortunately for the older home player, he won most of. John was heard telling someone that it was a good match but he wished it was closer between games 2 and 3. He got his wish and raced to 4/0 and then 10/8 lead before Tim managed to tip toe to the line.

Antonio and Sheen had battled a 5-setter out in the shires earlier in the season, but having videoed himself (playing squash!) at the inter-counties at the weekend Antonio knew exactly where to tweak his game – less bouncing up and down and wasting energy. Early on this tinkering caused a few issues but from 5/8 in the first he upped his game and closed things out in three. Conversely Will had caught Duane off the back of a boys’ golf trip in the first half and knew that things would be a little tougher second time round. Having lost the first he got on top 2-1 before his Mum arrived! She did call it, saying he would lose now she was there, and often commented on her boy’s game much to the enjoyment of the crowd. There are few tougher critics than your Mum, and apart from fact that she thought his ‘beard’ slowed him down and he wasn’t as fit as he used to be, it was a far from sympathetic welcome having been edged out in 5.

Last on, Jim and Joe that had the potential to see in the new day, however, Jim clearly had other ideas in racing to 2 game lead. At 7-7 in the third a lapse in concentration open the door and Joe came steaming through it. The fourth was tight to half-way, Jim jumped to match ball but Joe saved 3 of them before rightfully ;-) being denied a let at 9/10.

With Two for Tuesday still in place, it was Dominoes all round except for Antonio who hadn’t liked what he saw on the handy cam from the weekend so tucked into a salad! As always a fun fixture, the only remaining question being whether Will’s Car of the Year 2002 Yaris would beat Duane’s family sized Porsche back to suburbia.
