Report

Report:Dulwich put out their strongest team for the top of the league Bexley match but it was not quite enough.

1st up where Greg and Graham who are a couple of long rally merchants. Graham started well and was 3-0 up but Greg steadied the ship and levelled things up then went ahead. Greg was getting around the court well and Graham was just off the pace a little and that allowed Greg to walk off with the 1st. The 2nd started well for Greg and he was soon 4-0 up. Graham was trying hard and managed to notch up a few points but at 6-3 to Greg it seemed to be going one way. Graham was playing better and it unsteadied Greg a little and very quickly Graham was at game point. Greg tried hard to get back on level terms but Graham saw it off to level things. The 3rd saw Graham marching off to 4-0 before Greg managed to get a point. At 5-1 to Graham it was not looking good for Greg but Greg dug in and turned things around to go 1 point ahead. It was to and fro stuff from there on and both had game points but it was Greg that won out to go 2-1 up. Graham was not down hearted by this and the 4th started off very similar to the 3rd but at 5-1 down again Greg began to turn it around and gradually his ability to keep the rally going told and once he got level it was only going one way and Greg had a solid win to start things off.

On the other court Tom was playing Matt and the early stages saw Matt limbering up whilst Tom mashed it up! Tom seemed to be too good and was soon 8-0 up at which point Matt had finished limbering and began to plunder but after 4 points he went back to limber mode and Tom took game point to go 1 up. The 2nd saw Matt start off much more consistently and at 3-0 up having won 7 of the last 10 points it seems like he might be taking control. Tom steadied the ship and with Matt hitting too many boasts down Tom went ahead at which point Matt seemed to ease off a little and let Tom reach game point again. A couple of hand outs did not change the inevitable and Tom was soon 2 up. The 3rd saw Tom start off slow allowing Matt to get a foothold in the match with a 4-0 lead. Tom tried to get back on level terms but Matt was playing better and he kept Tom at bay all through and notched up his 1st game. The 4h saw Matt playing much more consistently and he was soon 4-0 up. Tom fought back and as he levelled it up he seemed to be on his way to a win. As Matt hit another boast down to give Tom a 7-4 lead it seemed that Tom would soon be walking off the court the winner. Matt however seemed to find some consistency and Tom could not wrestle back the serve so from a winning position he found himself on a loosing run which meant Matt took it to stop the rot. The 5th set inevitably had Matt pulling away to a 4-0 lead before Tom got going but by now Matt's consistency was making it tougher for Tom to keep up although he almost levelled things before Matt took control and finished off a well won match 3-2.

On the other court Dave was taking on Jack. Dave was putting up a fight in the early stages but Jack was picking up the points so he was gradually moving ahead until he reached the mid way point at which point a string of rally's put an end to the 1st game. The 2nd followed a similar pattern to the 1st with Dave fighting hard to hang on to Jack but once Jack got clear it was finished off quickly. The 3rd saw Dave work hard to get points on the board and get a solid 5-0 lead. Jack was not having that and he soon forged ahead at which point Dave decided it was not going to be like that and he battled hard to get a game on the board. The 4th was back to the same pattern as the 1st two and once Jack had reached the mid way point it was again all over quite quickly.

On the other court Andy was taking on Ron in an Animal versus Machine contest! The 1st was very tight all the way with Ron ahead most of the time although both players where feeling there way into the match. Ron got to game point 1st which was the trigger for Andy to switch things around and he ran out the winner. The 2nd was another tight one but this time Andy was always ahead. Ron was often having to dig the ball off the walls and when asked to go to the front of the court he dumped it in the tin one too many times and Andy took full advantage to go 2 up. The 3rd was close at the start then Ron steadied and headed for a win with a string of winning rally's to lead 7-2. Andy dug in and managed to claw it back almost level but it was Ron who secured game point 1st. Andy however kept getting the ball back and this frustrated Ron into making mistakes and Andy saved two game points before securing a game/match point and he made it count.

The deciding match was between Andy and Rob and Rob was not hanging about in the 1st. Andy is a notorious slow starter so this lead to a very quick 1st game. The 2nd was much more competitive with Andy building up leads only for Rob to level it. A number of disputed calls occurred as the heat of the battle grew. Andy kept putting it on Robs forehand which usually resulted in winning shot by Rob. Andy however managed to keep just ahead most of the time and hit game point 1st only for Rob to snatch it back to go 2 up. The 3rd was close all the way but this time Rob was ahead all the way and he finished it off with some clean hitting to take the match on the night for Bexley.

Olleys fish and chips was enjoyed by all as both teams tried to work out who they had for the cup matches next week.
