Report

Report:This was a tussle between two Dulwich teams fighting for survival in division 2 so no quarter was given in any match tonight.

1st up where Greg and Olly and game 1 saw Olly a bit slow to start enabling Greg to notch up a 6 point lead. Olly strung a few points together but Greg then closed it out to go 1 up. The 2nd was much closer but Greg was always just ahead. Olly had to keep pulling it back as Greg threatened to break away and it was Greg who got to game point 1st. Olly stuck in to level at 8-8 and both players then had a number of game points but it was Olly who managed to secure it to level the match at 1-1. The 3rd was following a very similar pattern as the 2nd but this time Olly managed to prevent Greg from getting to game point and finished it off with a flurry of winning rallies. The 4th was all Olly as Greg could not keep up with the pace so it was 1-0 to Dulwich 4

2nd up where vets Ian and Duncan (there was no Smith here). Duncan edged ahead early on only for Ian to level and this continued until at 5-5 Ian produced a number of winning shots to pull away and take the 1st game. The 2nd was similar to the 1st although Duncan was always just ahead. A few wayward shots from Ian allowed Duncan to take control and level it up at 1-1. The 3rd saw Duncan take a commanding early lead and although Ian battled back a 2 point gap was maintained by Duncan and he closed it out with some solid play. The 4th seemed to be going the same way as the 3rd as Duncan got off to a quick start but as the game moved towards the mid point Ian was gaining and eventually went ahead. At 8-5 up Ian seemed to have it in the bag and a brusing 5th set seemed ominous. Duncan dug in and clawed his way back and despite Ian having 5 game points it was Duncan who managed to finish it off to make it 2-0 to Dulwich 4

3rd up where Dave and Ollie and this one was fast and furious with Dave getting off to a flyer in the 1st and at 7-1 up it seemed to be all done and dusted. Ollie worked hard to pull it back although not before Dave had a couple of game points. Just as Ollie levelled at 8-8 Dave had another game point only for Ollie to force a game point of his own before Dave finally finished it off to go 1 up. The 2nd was all Dave and this time he did not allow for any comebacks and finished it off for the loss of just 2 points. The 3rd was a much closer game early on but Dave managed to stick Ollie on 3 whilst he piled up the points so at 8-3 up to Dave it seemed to be a clear win for Dulwich 3 here. Ollie was not done however and he staged a revival as Dave tried to close it out. At 8-8 Dave called 1 suggesting he just wanted it over quickly and sure enough Ollie did the job to make it 2-1 to Dave. The 4th saw both players working hard but Dave always had the edge and pulled away to a commanding lead. Ollie tried in vain to pull it back but Dave finished off to make it 2-1 to Dulwich 4 on the night.

4th up where Tom and Colin and despite Colin not playing much of late it did not show in the 1st as he built up a commanding 5-0 lead before Tom got going. Tom got it back to 5-7 from 7-1 down and looked about to make it difficult but Colin managed to push on and take it to go 1 up. The 2nd had Tom in charge and he maintained a 3 point lead all the way to 6 but the game got seriously tough at that stage with both players working hard to keep the ball in play. Colin gradually pulled it back and then went ahead and secured what had looked like an unlikely 2nd game to go 2 up, The 3rd had Colin building up an early lead as Tom seemed to be losing his way a little. Tom levelled it a 4-4 only to see Colin pull away again at which point Tom stepped it up and forced his way through to game point. Colin levelled up and Tom uncharacteristically called 2 but it worked out for him after a hard fought game. The 4th had Colin again with an early lead but once Tom levelled it he seemed to pull away as Colin faded a little so now it was 2-2. The 5th set was all Tom and he came out as the victor in what had seemed for large parts of the match to be be going Colins way and made it 2-2 on he night.

5th up where Andy and Ben which was going to be tough for Ben as Andy had won the 1st half encounter very easily. Ben started off well and was 6-0 up before Andy managed to get a point and once it had been established that Andy was allowed to win points he carried on without answer from Ben and very quickly Andy had the game won to go 1 up. The 2nd had Andy pulling off to an early lead only for Ben to return the favour and go 4-3 up. Andy gradually pulled away and despite numerous hand outs Ben could not add to his tally and Andy went 2 up. The 3rd again had Ben taking an early lead but this time he managed to push all the way to game point so at 8-2 up it seemed to be heading for a 4th. Andy however would not allow this and he recovered anything that Ben could throw at him to force his way back to 8-8. Ben had a couple of handouts at this point but failed to add any more points and Andy saw it off to win 3-0 and make it 3-2 to Dulwich 3 on the night.
