Report:Bexley Fall Foul To Andys' Tactics

Going into the match, Bexley were unbeaten and Bromley were unbeaten on their travels. Something had to give, and as it turned out it was Darrens calf.

The match started with number 4's Joss Stafford and Alastair McMeckan, and on the adjacent court number 2's Rob Lewis and Ian McMeckan.

Alastair had been on a cycling holiday in France with mum the previous week, and hadn't played a competitive squash match for two weeks. On the other hand Joss hadn't dropped a game all season. Despite a valiant effort by Alastair in the second, losing 9 - 7, Joss kept his 100% record and won 3 - 0.

On the other court Rob and Ian were having a ding dong of a match. Rob was on fire in the first two games winning points at ease, Ian was being totally outclassed, and was slowly losing his rag.

Meanwhile on the other court number 3's Matt Badger and Dave Stacey began their match.

Dave is just back from a long break and has played squash once in the last 3 months, couple that with the fact that he's living the student life, it was inevitable which way the match would go.

Matt is playing much more now and looks hard to beat at the moment, he was too good for Dave, beating him comfortably 3 - 0.

Bexley were 2 - 0, and Rob was beating Ian 2 - 0, and 4 - 0 in the third. Bexley were winning at a canter.

Rob began to tire slightly in the third, and gradually Ian fought his way back into the match. Ian somehow managed to win the third 9 - 6 and take the game into a fourth. Rob seemed dead and buried in the fourth. Ian
raced into a 8 - 0 lead, and Rob looked like he was giving up.

Somehow Rob began to claw his way back into the game, much to the annoyance of Ian who began to show his petulance of previous years. Ian was losing his head, but luckily for him he broke his racquet in half.

According to a source close to the match, Rob hit a drive that literally stuck to the wall: "You would have had to use a hammer and chisel to get it off the wall" the source said.

Ian went for it at "500 mph", and snapped his racquet in half.

Without a spare racquet Ian had to use one of Andys'. The much needed delay cleared Ians' head and he won the fourth 9 - 4. Rob was tired in the fifth and despite the game being close in the early stages, Ian went on to win 9 - 3.

A good win for Ian, but his attitude stunk and he will be disciplined by the manager.

Number 5's Darren Thompson and Andy Brackstone provided the main talking point of the evening though.

The first game was extremely close at 8 - 7 to Andy, when Bexleys' luck ran out.

Stretching for a drop Darren pulled a muscle in his leg, meaning that he had to concede the match to Andy and set-up a winner takes all match between Steve and Lewis.

Observers of the match were quick to point out though that Andy clearly had the measure of Darrens' game. The pressure that Andy was exerting on Darren was too much, and it was only a matter of time before Darren gave way. (Source : Andy Brackstone)

Lewis unbeaten all season won a tight first game 9 - 6 and then took command winning the second 9 - 3, and leading the third 8 - 4. Steve fought back though, whilst Lewis began to tire. Might have had something
to do with the fact that he spent most of the weekend on the razzle.

Steve took the fourth 10 - 8, but Lewis stepped it up in the fourth winning 9 - 3.

Bromley CC won the match 3 - 2, even if one of them was by default. It was harsh on Bexley who had looked like running away with it in the early stages.

Match Report by Matt Badger

With Bromley CC starting the match 12 points in front but Bexley having a game in hand, a win Bexleys way would be a double whammy for BCC.

First up was Joss v Alistair at 4. Joss, once again provided the team with a great start to the match, winning 3-0 with good lengths and tricky drops. I believe Joss is yet to drop a game this season.

Next up at 2 was Rob vs Ian. Rob cruised to a 2-0 lead. After that I can only comment on speculation as I was on court...my only hints to how the match was finishing were McMeckan's anguished cries and a broken racket...."yes" I thought, how wrong I was!!! Ian turned it round, raised him game and out-fitnessed his opponent (yes, Ian OUT-FITNESSED his opponent!! - no offence Ian!!). Rob did so much running he now needs a Stannah stair lift to get up his front step.

At 3, Matt took on an out-of-form David. 3-0 to Matt in lightening quick time as both players realised that David needed to get his head out of his study books (bar!) more often last summer!!!

At 5, Darren played Andy in what was expected to be the deciding match. Maybe it was Andy's cunning disguise shots that twisted Darren the wrong way, or that voodoo doll he keeps in his squash bag. Unfortunately Darren went lame in the first game, tweaking his calf and had to pull out levelling the match at 2-2.

Left to decide the match was Falla and Lewis at 1. A good match to watch. Lewis solid and running well as usual to go 2-0 up before Steve nicked one back for a much needed point. Lewis finished off the match well to win 3-1, giving BCC the 3-2 victory, 14-9 the points. With Bexley still having one game in hand, a 20pt win would be handy to leapfrog the Cricket Club!!
