Report: | Hosting Park Langley usually produces a fiery night of competitive squash and this was no exception. Two matches went the distance and could have gone either way. As it was Clive pulled off a 3-2 win from 0-2 down and then Steve did likewise.
Paddy v Clive saw Paddy move the ball around, varying the pace and for the first time this summer put the ball away at the front. Clive started to read his opponent and in his now familar way slowly clawed his way back leading to a thrilling fifth game. Paddy held match ball and in a long rally needed to put away a backhand volley with his opponent stuck in the backhand rear corner. The volley found the tin and the lower part of the tin at that. Clive made no more errors to take the match at 3-2.
Lloyd v James promised a lot with two shot players on court, but James' experiecne and fitness would tell in the end. It was good to see James back on court playing some sublime shots straight out of the coaching manual. Lloyd had his moments but James was too canny and moved Lloyd around at speed to take the match.
Steve v Gordon produced their third encounter in a year with each match going 3-2 in Steve's favour. This had it all, top spin volley smashes, top spin and cut drop shots from every conceivable angle into each corner and fantastic retrieving. The plan almost worked with Gordon holdong match ball but choosing to serve to Steve's forehand saw his opponent dispatch the serve into the cross court nick. That was the fourth game which Steve then won 13-11 to level at 2-2. The fifth saw Gordon take a lead once again but only for Steve to come back and win it again with a cross court volley nick.
Looking forward to the season proper in the winter. |
