Report: | The visitors to PL last night were Bromley LTC sporting a strong line-up. PL were fortunate to have an embarrassment of reserves to call on with 2nd, 3rd and 4th teams all playing non Tuesday matches, so the holiday schedules were covered this week.
First up: London snr v Shil Patel.
I've not seen Shil in a good long while, so it was nice to have a good hard run around again. And so it proved, with Shil coming out of the blocks like a scalded cat, leathering the ball all round the court while a bemused author could only find the tin repeatedly. Not the ideal duration of first game to get the usual rust out of the system. Things started to look up thereafter for the author, as the blitzkrieg abated slightly, a few mistakes from Shil started to creep in and the author's length game improved significantly.
This remained the pattern for the rest of the match with the exception of the start of the 4th where too many silly shots attempted too early nearly derailed things. A recovery late on righted the ship (to mix metaphors).
Next door: Kennedy v Jones.
Gina seems to have maintained her usual crazy schedule. Not content with competing in a gazillion junior tournaments recently she'd been following a punishing schedule (including bleep tests) at Bexley on this match day(!) and understandably looked a little jaded. Nevertheless, this was a great battle, with Billy playing some tidy squash and Gina hanging in there. The tide swung back and forth with not much in it either way for four games. In the 5th Gina got a good lead (9-5) but then it all went Pete Tong and Billy got back to hold a match ball at 10-9. A shriek of frustration from Gina was followed by two fiercely contested points which Gina took to scrape over the finishing line. A great match and a good win.
Next up: Pratt v Young.
This one followed the usual pattern for these two. Zeb's game has improved massively over the past couple of years, but sadly for him Steve's has improved stratospherically! Zeb played well throughout, although he felt he'd not had much touch. It certainly didn't come across that way to the spectators, but Steve's speed gets him out of any tricky situations, and he exhibited good control most of the time. Chuck in the the usual array of nicks (one of them nearly went onto the next door court under the wall), and you could see Zeb's problem. Things were topped off nicely with a King Lewy style pirouetting backhand. The cherry on the cake in an entertaining match.
Last on: Black v Ket Patel.
Charles started well in this one. Both players have a very handy turn of speed, and despite one or two loose ones being fired about, lots of court coverage was in evidence as Charles tried to avenge his defeat against Ket last time out. As the match wore on though, the tide turned and Ket took advantage of a few too many shots that opened the court up from Charles. Ket maintained good control for the rest of the match with the working backhand drop being an effective shot throughout. A good win for Ket.
Much jocularity afterwards about the prospect of the author's possible responses to Zeb's nicely balanced match report from the first half. As you can see though, the author has stoically resisted the temptation to sink to those depths. A good night's squash all round with the BLTC guys, (Gordy included as the team traveling supporter for the night). |
