Report: | 1st up tonight where Duncan (one hand) and Mike. Duncan sporting a fetching pink bandaged broken left hand was playing a free flowing style whilst Mike was being forced to retrieve from all corners of the court. The first had some long rallies but it was all going Duncan's way and he won it without dropping a point. The 2nd was similar to the 1st but with a few longer rallies - one must have been 50+ shots - again however Mike was not having much luck and Duncan took it without losing a point. The 3rd was much closer and Mike had a number of handouts before he managed to put his 1st point on the board. The game was more even now although Duncan was always in charge. Mike got it back to 6-3 only for Duncan to force his 1st game point. Mike won one more point before Duncan finished it off with both players finding the heat quite difficult.
Next up where Olly and James. James was on top early on as Olly was slow to get started, James was playing the points better and he was soon at game point. Olly staged a mini revival to get back to 8-4 down but James finished it off at the next opportunity. The 2nd was a key game and James started off well taking an early lead. Olly was much more in the game and kept it tight then at 3-5 down forced his way to a 6-5 lead. It was anyone's at this stage and it looked like it would be Olly to take this one as he went 7-6 up then 8-6 up. James was fighting hard all the way and he managed to get the initiative back and go right through to game point. Olly tried to rest it back from James but James was determined to keep Olly out and he finished it off to go 2 up. The 3rd was too much for Olly as James was now playing with confidence and he soon had it wrapped up for a 3-0 win.
On the other court it was a pair of Gloucestershire boys in Dave and Myles going toe to toe.The 1st was keenly fought and pretty tight with Dave just edging ahead. Dave kept ahead and extended it slightly towards the end of the game as he won it 9-5. The 2nd was again tight at the start but at 3-2 up Myles put together a string of points as Dave lost a little concentration and it was now 1-1. The 3rd was again tight in the early stages but Dave was back on form and he made it tough for Myles and Dave ran away with it in the end to go 2-1 up. The 4th was very similar to the 3rd and Myles could only keep it close early on and once Dave got on top it was over quite quickly to make it 3-1 to Dave.
Next up where Greg and Niall and this one was a hard fought match with not much between the two. Greg took an early 2-1 lead only for Niall to go ahead at 5-2. Greg was struggling to keep Niall at bay although it was Greg who gradually closed the gap to 4-5. Niall managed to keep that lead and a couple of points near the end put him 1 up. The 2nd saw Greg in determined mood and Niall tried but could not muster a point so it was soon 1-1. The 3rd was close but Greg was having success with his drops and volleys to make it hard for Niall to keep in the rallies. Both players where winning points but Greg was just doing slightly better and at 6-5 up he managed to finish it off to go 2-1 up. The 4th seemed to be a game too far for Niall as Greg again made his front of court game count and very quickly he had it won 3-1.
The final game was the number 1 string match with Andy taking on Peter. Andy was in good form and he was making it tough for Peter although Peter did have an early 3-2 lead. Andy was playing well and getting to everything that Peter was doing and slowly Andy put point after point on the board and won it for the loss of just one more point. The 2nd again saw Peter taking an early 3-1 lead but once Andy got going it was one way traffic and Andy had a 2-0 lead. The 3rd was different however and Peter was determined to make his mark although this time it was Andy who had a 3-2 lead only for Peter to force his way to a clear 6-3 lead. Andy tried hard to get back and added a couple of points but Peter found the shots to get the game won and make it 2-1. The 4th however saw Andy in control once Peter had taken his standard early lead. Andy moved quickly to a safe 7-2 lead but Peter was not done yet and he managed to pull back a few points before Andy finished it off.
Shame to hear that the Knowle Park 1 and 2 are off to work elsewhere as that will make it hard for them to compete at this level so good luck in finding some replacements. |
