Report: | Poultwood, in the chase for promotion and needing a few points in the bank to cover having to sit out the last week of the season, were not looking forward to a tricky away fixture at Sundridge Park. So when the phone call came saying that Sundridge Park would be short a player there were not too many upset in the PWSRC camp.
Poultwood were, on paper, at full strength, McLeod having returned from skiing. However the slopes had not been kind to the Poultwood number 1. A gammy leg meant that he could only run in small circles on the T. Mr Fender is a damn difficult proposition with all limbs functioning. So a couple of games to realise that it was not going to loosen up were all that seemed sensible.
The match was therefore reduced to best of three ties.
Kevin Tullet and Jake Wallis lined up to replay the tie that was played on a rather cold court at Poultwood in late November. Jake won that one quite convincingly. It was immediately apparent that this match would not be a copy of the previous one. For a start the court was extremely hot (25 deg C!) thanks to a Park Langley social doubles match played before hand and secondly Kevin was in a far more persistent mood. Jake hit some good lengths and was mixing the pace well, but Kevin just kept retrieving and eventually Jake suffered, making more and more mistakes in an effort to finish the long rallies. Windows were thrown open and thermostats adjusted and for a while it looked as if Jake might come back into it. The damage was done though in the first two games and Kevin closed the match out with some solid squash.
The De Wit express train was timetabled to meet Mr Booth at 3. Maybe the warm court would clip the wings of the flying Herman. Nope.
So the fixture stood at 2 all. The courts were a pleasant temperature. All was set for the decider. Pascal Dowers, long hair neatly controlled by a Beckhamesque hair accessory against Giles Cannon, medium length hair wild like windswept grassland. The Sundridge Park player started the better taking the first game 9-6 controlling the pace of the game expertly. Giles responded in the second and third, upping the pace, charging forward to every volley opportunity. Pascal had trouble living with this and went down 9-0 9-1. The between game advice to Giles from all of his team mates was keep the pace up, keep the pressure on. So at 2-1 up in the deciding tie of a fixture Poultwood really need to win, Giles decides to take all the pace off and allow his opponent to dictate the run of the game. Pascal promptly did so winning the forth easily 9-2. Having proved to himself that the advice given was in fact correct and giving his team mates a scare in the process, Herman having to resort to burying his head in his towel, Giles turned on the afterburners again to race to 6-2, moving Pascal fast enough to require an adjustment of the hair accessory. Resumption saw Giles creep to 8-2. Giles slowed down again, Pascal raced back to 8-4 and Herman’s head went back into the towel!
And then all of a sudden it was over, a mad boast error at the front of the court from Pascal. Poultwood had won 3-2 and Herman could be removed from his towel.
