Report

Report:A chilly night saw PL entertain Beckenham. Luckily PL had recruited reinforcements in the person of Mark to face a very full strenghth looking Beckenham and this turned out to be a very competitive match.

First up: Peel jnr v Shapcott
A tough scrap between these two. Only caught a bit via peripheral vision really, but the first 3 games were fiercely contested with Jack going 2-1 up. At that point it appears the tank was close to empty, and Alistair kept going at the same level, whilst Jack's performance fell away.

Next door: Lennox v Olby
This was a sterling effort from Mark. Into his stride early against a slow starting Guy, it was only a few mistakes at crucial points in the game (particularly giving a few too many mid court backhands away) that saw Guy sneak the first. A much improved length saw Mark grab the second, but Guy had got going by now and despite putting in a lot of legwork Mark couldn't do quite enough in either the 3rd or 4th. Very vocal support from his 2nd team colleagues in the person of DC and Simon G no doubt did no harm, with Ray adding his usual genteel observations about proceedings throughout.

Next up: London snr v James
On a freezing cold court (hadn't quite realised 'til I got on it) this was about who could get the best length earliest. Thankfully for the author, he was into his stride early for a change, and Paul was making probably a few more mistakes than normal. As a result the author was in the driving seat for the greater part of the match, with a lapse only in the second half of the 3rd game, coming out on top in four games.

Next door: Kennedy v Pratt
Steve was probably guilty of not giving Gina quite enough respect to start off with here. Gina was off to a flying start, taking the ball very early and to good effect in the 1st. Steve took the next two fairly comfortably but had reckoned without a gritty fightback to take the 4th which ended with a cross court nick winner. Steve now stepped full on the gas for the 5th and controlled the remaining points. A good effort from Gina who continues to improve.

Last on: Kay v Burrell-Grant
This looked to be a good game from the bits I saw, but Paul always had the measure of his opponent and as is his wont made few mistakes, concentrating on what he does best - line and length. Score-wise it got gradually closer, but Paul did enough in each to take it in three and wrap up a good (if ultimately unsuccessful) point scoring exercise for the PL team who actually managed to score more points (if win bonus excluded).

A good bit of banter in the bar afterwards as ever with the Beckenham guys, with Alisdair hoovering up spare food like it was going out of fashion.
