Report

Report:Last night's match with PL entertaining Bromley CC was chiefly notable for the marathon battle at no.5, more of which later.
PL had just about managed to field a full side this week thanks to the 3rd team playing on Thursday, but with Steve stepping in at the top and Gina unavailable it was 1 step forward and 1 step back. Anyway ...

First up: London jnr v Ryall
A pretty entertaining match between these two, with Lewy floating around the court in his usual relaxed manner, perhaps making a few more mistakes than normal. Steve started slowly but once into the 2nd stepped on the gas to take it comfortably. He then appeared to sit back on it and despite a comeback from a big deficit (3-9), Lewy managed to close it out. Normal service was resumed in the 4th for a win to Steve. Good value entertainment from both players for the punters.

Next door: Patel v McMeckan snr (jnr)
Nice to see Ian back again after a lonnnggggg time. He looked to be playing pretty well too.
The two stand-ins did themselves and their teams proud, with the match of the night. Fortunes swung back and forth, with Nilen going 2-1 and 10-7 up only to be pegged back. In the 5th it went to 10-8 to Ian, but this time it was Nilen sticking resolutely to the task and sneaking in 13-11 for a good win.

So far, so good with PL riding on an unaccustomed wave of wins.

Next up: London snr v Stabler
Same old problems for the author in this one. A good start (a surprise in itself), but not quite able to do enough at the end of the game to take it. In the 2nd Sam had his nose in front all the way, but the 3rd saw another promising start evaporate in the middle of the game. Too many attempted lobs (why, when your opponent is so tall?!!) and too many (where many = 1 every 10 shots or so) short mid court balls, leaving an opening that was duly dispatched for a winner. Frustrating stuff, but another lesson that more consistent shot making required at this level.

Next door: Peel jnr v McMeckan jnr (jnr)
Didn't see any of this, but I believe it followed the usual pattern for Jack's games of late. A good couple of games followed by falling away in the 3rd. James said that Jack was making a lot of mistakes.

Last on: Kay v Horder
Possibly not one for the squash purist, but certainly no lack of effort on either player's part. Paul did his usual marathon amount of running, and super lean Matt matched him shot for shot. That said, the shots were all bread and butter stuff, with neither player looking to have sufficient confidence to go in short. Most points resulted from mistakes. Paul in particular spurned many opportunities to take Matt in short, and when he did play a drop shot you could see why!
Anyway, a tough battle, with Paul just losing his way a little at the critical point at the end of the 4th.

And so ... so near and yet so far. Btw all the snr/jnr, jnr/jnr stuff is in deference to McMecken snr snr who is still battling away in the lower divisions somewhere.

An entertaining post match discussion in the bar afterwards, as it always is with the BCC boys, with the main topic being James's impending nuptials and the crib that was being rented for 2 nights to celebrate in style. Mucho reminiscence of times past (or should that be p*ssed), with a certain Mr Sumner's ability to obliviously sleep in an upside down bedroom causing much hilarity.
