Report: | Not a good night for Bexley 5, as a very strong Wilsonians side claimed maximum points. The number two players got the ball rolling, with Bexley's Steve Spring taking on Nick Thompson. Nick played entirely error free squash for two and half games, and raced to 2-0 lead, and 6-0 in the third. Steve has been Bexley's most consistently good performer this year and he showed a great deal of grit to come back in the third and held a game point at 8-7, but Nick saved it and went onto win the third game 10-8 and clinch a 3-0 win. On the next court the respective number threes fought it out - Bexley's Meir Mizrahi played Dave Thompson (Nick's brother.) Meir got off to a great start, winning the first six points of the match and held a game point at 8-6, but was gradually reeled in by Dave, who clinched the game 10-8. After that Dave assumed total control, winning the next two games 9-2, 9-3 to close out another 3-0 win for Wilsonians. Next of court were the respective number fives - Gareth Bacon for Bexley vs Steve Spencer for Wilsonians. Steve started the better, taking the first game 9-3. The second was closely fought until, with the score at 6-6, Steve quickly knocked off the three points required to take the game 9-6 and move into a 2-0 lead. Game three mirrored the second, but in reverse - Gareth won it 9-6 to push the match into a fourth. Steve got ahead early and never looked like losing the lead, winning 9-4 to take the match 3-1. On the other court the number four players were involved in what turned out to be the closest match of the evening. Bexley's Vic Hulland started very impressively, taking a 9-0, 9-6 lead, but Wilsonians' Gary Kelly worked his way back into the match, winning the third 9-5 and racing through the fourth 9-3. The early stages of the deciding game were close, but the momentum was with Gary, who eventually won it 9-4 and took the match 3-2. The final match of the evening took place between the two number one players, Luke Grindle of Bexley and Gerald Tredinnick of Wilsonians. The first game was of exceptionally high quality (the first point alone consisted of a rally in excess of 30 shots)and was eventually edged 9-7 by Gerald. The second and third games did not live up to the opener - Gerald took total control while Luke missed a few opportunities, and Gerald took both games 9-2, to win the match 3-0. The post match chilli-con-carne and beers went down well. Wilsonians are a good bunch of lads and this win took them top of the table. Well played, we'll see you again in the last game of the season. |
