Report

Report: What a night it was, it really was!! Limpsfield arrived early, warming up under the watchful eye of coach, Rachel. Meanwhile Bromley team on the scenic route, so first on the two McMeckans, and thanks to Roger for marking. Alastair v Jon - unusually for Alastair off to a flier, 8-0 up before Jon woke up, fought back to 4-8, before losing first game 9-5. Next 2 games much more competitive , Jon going 4-2 up in the 2nd before level at 6 all and Alastair then winning 3 consecutive shots to win 9-6. Jon went 6-2 up in the third - quick onto the ball and hitting well on the fore-hand. Alastair returned to defensive play, deep shots to the back and tight drops - hand-in and went from 2-6 to 6 all, before hand in again and Jon decided to tin 2 shots and give an easy match ball drop for Alastair to win 3-0. A very competitive game. Meanwhile Alex, debut for Bromley not having played competitive squash since university. Certainly showed in the first game with John going 8-0 up before Alex won his first point and pulling back only to lose 9-5. Alex with advice from his younger twin brother stepped up his game in the 2nd and with deep shots and good retrieving won 9-2. John rallied back in the 3rd - lead swapped backwards and forwards to 7-7-, before Alex won 9-7. Game on and John came out strong in the fourth, hitting good low cross courts and had Alex scampering around all over the court and managing to hit the tin with drops, drives and boasts, - John 5-1 up, 7-3 up before I had to leave and mark another game - only for Alex to rally back and run trough from 3-7 down to win 9-7. A very even match and well done Alex who quickly left for the bar!. Next on man alive Steve v Adam. What a start from Adam, quick onto the ball, early volleys forcing Steve to rush his shots and particularly his drops and Adam raced ahead to 7-2 - looking ominous for Steve who then managed to get some of his game back before going down 9-7. From then on it was a transformed Steve, retrieving well, forcing Adam (the man with elastic arms)into the back corners before bringing him forward to stretch at the front and making un-forced errors, 9-4 to Steve. Adam remained competitive but by now Steve was on a roll and when Adam was in a good position to play winners he managed to hit himself with the ball several times!!! (I think he liked the ball as he kept it after the match)!!Magic man Steve won the third 9-3 and the fourth 9-0 - still not sure how he does it. Meanwhile marathon match between Rachel and Mark - Rachel with superior technique and basic squash won the first 9-6 and the 2nd 10-8. However, birthday boy Mark stepped up the pace and with poise, girth and shot selection took the 3rd, 9-1, the 4th 9-0. All on the 5th with Rachel needing to up her game - she did and very even - much better shots by Rachel, even game with Mark just edging ahead 7-5 up, 8-6 up. Six match balls to Mark - Has Rachel forgotten its his birthday? as she fought back to 8-8. Mark calls 2 and gets hand in - good drop to the front and reactions be-lying his age with a volley length winner from behind his neck, 10-8 to Mark. Finally, Stewart v James. Stewart started well, on his toes, good retrieving and good shot selection, especially early volleys. James doing all he could to stay in it - but going down 9-7 in the first. Second game tough match but Stewart with more control taking the 2nd, 9-3. Third game saw Stewart slow dramatically with marathon man James running faster and faster, getting everything back and taking the 3rd and 4th 9-5. All on the 5th - Stewart unable to match James pace who improved his game further with cross court drops and boasts and deservedly won a high standard match 9-1 in the fifth. Match was much closer than the result -could have gone either way. A late night with Mark buying drinks and celebrating his first win!!! He is now on a roll!
