Report

Report:As I sit here like typing away like a tyrannosaurus rex with my biffy arm, I am for once at a loss for words at the team effort required to bring this win to fruition. To say Bandido Bacaroni brought the A-team is an understatement. Keith and Luke playing strings 1 and 2? Really? These are division three players in any other squash club so here is where I should begin my prose.

Credit to Gurkan for putting up a good fight against Luke. Luke definitely won the warmup, in fact, as he was warming up hitting the ball with his Thor-like hammer, Lily could not hide the look of worry on her face when she realized Gurkan was about to step into the gladiator ring with . Fortunately Gurkan also saw this look of worry and instead of heading straight to the bar as I would have done, got his shoes on and got busy. Unfortunately on this occasion there was only going to be one winner and Luke did what he had to do. The good news was Gurkan had saved this night as his once-in-a-season drinking night and consoled himself with a couple of shandies.

Playing Mabes is always going to be hard for Lily even if there wasn’t a three foot difference in height. That said, Lily started well by taking the first game whilst Keith worked out what sport he was actually playing (tennis, rackeball, football oh no, it is squash, engage squash brain…). Once Keith had his squash head on and realized he might have to drop and move forward, it was really hard for Lily to get the ball past the 6’ 97” frame. Lobs have to be extra high, widths have to be extra wide and drops have to be extra droppy (not my best description) and all on a hot court with not high ceilings. Great game to watch.

The 5’s. This was a game Dave was really up for. Going from ‘I don’t really every want to play team squash again’ when he was in El-Bandido Bacaroni’s team last year, to asking for a slot before the team selection was announced. How could I refuse? I couldn’t and Dave did not disappoint. El Bandido tried to imply there was something wrong with his knee before the match, but my only response to this is Man-up.

Lotti v Vic. Now, I have said this before and I will not apologise for saying again. Vic has got 27 shots in his armoury that are good enough to score a point against anybody. I myself have been a victim of a late-running Vic, who turned up on court 15 minutes late and dispatched me 3-0 within a 45 minute court including the warmup, so I know how Lotti felt when she found herself 2-0 down. Luckily for us she listened to her Dad and changed from the beautiful hard hitting lines, which were allowing Vic to stay at the back and hammer home his winners. Another difficult scalp to the mini-Taylor-French that will only serve to improve her game in the long run.

Oh yes and Rob won. Well done….. As if I could leave it there. I have to set some context to this win. If we were talking about 2015 Winter season Rob Rowe, he would not have even bothered to turn up. Ouch my back hurts, not playing that is final. We are however, not talking about 2015 Winter Rob, we are talking about 2016 summer Rob who is currently sitting on a 63% win rate. I missed the first two games as I was marking to pay for my beer ration but when it was reported Rob was two down I thought it was fair enough as he was carrying a back twinge. The next thing we hear it was 2-1 and then 2-2. I had to check the court to make sure I hadn’t inadvertently put out a ringer. Not only would this have made El-Bandido’s day, I would have had to temper my report, but to my sheer delight, it was 2016 Rob who, with dripping wet shirt and a steely determination in his eye had battled back to put it on even terms. As the 5th game started, Steve took an early lead and I thought he was going to put the match to bed, but 2016 Rob wasn’t in the same frame of mind and chipped away at the score until he was level and then ahead and serving for the match. What a nail biting finish as the hand-outs went back and forth until finally, 2016 Rob brought home the Bacon and sealed the match for Bexley 6. Arrrrrrrrrhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh brilliant.

I really enjoyed the evening and didn’t even mind paying the huge bar bill at the end. A true team effort.
