Report: | Bexley 6 always a fun team to play against and although scores look a bit one-sided the matches were much closer than the scores. First up, Keeley and Lilly - by now they know each others game very well and Keeley maintained the upper hand throughout. All points were competitively contested with both players playing good lengths and widths with long rallies. However, Keeley was "awesome" quick to the ball, right shot selection, keeping Lilly off balance and putting loose shots away. Lilly played much better than the score suggests and has time to continue improving - we wish her well with her move north. Paul at 5 maintained his enthusiasm for the match and with a laid back performance won comfortably. Next on Alastair and Gurkan and Mark and Lotti. Unusually for Alastair a good start with Gurkan off the pace and raced to a 9-0 first game win. The second was much more competitive, with Gurkan moving better and hitting forehand volley winners, saving game point and eventually losing 10-8. Third game saw Alastair back in control, boasts and drops with Gurkan finding twisting difficult and 9-3 to Alastair. Meanwhile, a marathon on next court - fitness Guru Mark racing to a 2 game lead - quick reactions, lots of winners, plenty of banter to stop Lotti concentrating - could Mark be a match winner?? Unfortunately, no, Lotti maintained her pace, hitting more shots long and wide and took the next 2 (bit of advice from one-arm skipper Adam)!!!!! that's what captains do, apart from drinking in the bar. Final game very even at 5-5- but Lotti stayed focussed and despite Mark's fitness took the 5th , 9-6. Match score 2-2 - wonderman Steve v Dave. Dave won the warm up and had Steve feeling nervous - first game saw Dave hitting those half court winners, particualry on the fore-hand and Steve struggling to get consistency for the first few points - eventually Steve relaxed and raced through to win first game. Second game close to 4 all and then Steve's drops, volleys saw him through to 2-0. Dave again started the third game positively going 5-4 up -then the rally of the evening saw Steve retrieving from every corner of the court, backwards, forwards and then Dave dropped front backhand with Steve stuck at the back - Steve, legs scampering, somehow got to the front and hit a winner off the drop, followed by the "yeah" arms in the air -the crowd gasping (both of them - Isabell and Maisie) - Dave thoroughly bemused by Steve's retrieving, continued scratching his head while Steve went straight through to win 3-0. A good meal was had by all except Gurkan who was banished to the end of the bar by Adam - he was offered a sausage but refused. A good evening, as usual, thanks to Bexley 6.
