Report

Report: First up Jake v Johnathan. Both have a similar game, plenty of running, fit and spells of good shots, and plenty of tins. . All games were pretty even until about 7 all, when Jonathan played more consistently, forcing Jake into errors, especially at the front of the court, and taking the match 3-0. Meanwhile the young protégé Veer took on Harry. A match of high quality with spells of looseness by both players. As a consequence the games went back and forth with both players establishing leads and then loosing them. Veer narrowly won the first 2 games - Veer playing up and down the side walls (well some of the time)! and Harry with excellent touch play on volleys, delayed boasts and a high lob serve which Veer didn't enjoy. The third match saw Jonathan move up a level both with choice of shot and recognising Veer was tiring and took the game comfortably 15/8. The 4th game saw a complete turn around. Veer overcome his tiredness, hitting pacey drives long and tighter -Harry seemed to tire, got moved off the T and struggled with the corner shots. Veer took the 4th 15/8 - good game. Next up the mercurial Nick taking on Marc. Marc fit, fast, and with hammer like shots, not seen in the coaching manuals, took the first 2 games, consistently putting Nick under pressure and not having the time to play his usual array of shots. What happened next? Well the game completely reversed. Although Marc continued to try to hit the ball through the front wall, Nick was on it!! Almost like a gazelle!! ALMOST!! Takes the 3rd 15/2, and although following games closer, took control and won 3/2. Nick said his back didnt warm up until the 3rd game, so we are are having a whip round for a hot water bottle to wear in the warm up. Finally, the NUMBER 1's.Tony v Craig. Another match which swung one way then the other. Tony 9/5 up in the 1st loses 17/15; 9/2 up in the 2nd loses 15/12, wins the 3rd, 15/10. The 4th match saw Tony 9/6 up, 13/11 up, when he missed an easy drop and eventually losing 19/17! The match could have gone either way. Craig playing a tight defensive game, moving Tony round and then volleying winners from the T. Tony, retrieving well, always pushing for the T, hitting great winners on his forehand, especially cross court. Although all games were pretty even, Craig just managed to keep Tony off balance restricting his usual winners and took a nail bitter of a match and consequently securing the points for a team win. Good squash, good sportsmanship throughout.
