Report: | A good win for Bromley if somewhat surprising given the lack of regular upper order players, but the depth of the squad,or is it girth , showed up well on the night.
I marked the no.5s with Alan proving too strong for Bob who simply played too many shots too close to his opponent who was able to display the range of winners we all know he has in his not inconsiderable locker. On this occasion Alan was not to be distracted and quickly pushed on to get the job done. As we all know this all too rare an occurrence with a player who sometimes can be distracted by just about anything.
I saw very little of the no.4s but it does seem as if Graham is gradually beginning to find his feet again in team squash and another win will only be good for his confidence.
The two captains played out a close 5 set game at no.3 with Kevin winning the first two games and looking comfortable. The third game could have gone either way but Phil nicked it and battled out to win the next two. It would help him immeasurably however if only he could learn to try and serve in court more than twice in succession.
Again I didn't see much of the no.2s, as I was busy getting my moneys worth on the other court, but this was on paper a great result for Steve, who did not expect too much playing at such an elevated level.Graham did afterwards make much of the fact that the previous evenings intake of lager had taken its toll but I suspect Steve's more relaxed approach to the game had something to do with the result as well. Nonetheless Graham rather pointedly said to me to make sure he plays Steve in the return match!!
So with match standing at 4-0 to Bromley the No.1 s went on in front of a full gallery. Graham in his defence has not played much recently, despite my best efforts to persuade him to get some practice in,and it rather showed somewhat.Alan
showing great anticipation was able to read most of what Graham was trying to do and ran out a comfortable winner. Graham battled as he will always do but was up against a classy opponent. So not a good night for Graham, having marked two games and lost his own 3-0. I just hope he doesn't take it out on my car!!!!
