Report

Report: Could this be the year? None of us want to mention the "P" word (promotion) but it's on our minds. Once again we found a way to win the war although some battles were lost.
One of those battles was the game between Graham and your intrepid reporter at No 3. I knew I was up against it coz Graham has wiped the floor with me before. However, my resent form lead me to believe that I had a chance to get some decent points. NOT SO!! After playing like a one legged man in the 1st, I came back to hold my own in the 2nd until I started making some silly unforced errors and Graham took full advantage. I vented my displeasure with the way I was playing, once I was off court at the end of the 2nd game. I think the whole of Cobdown, Ditton, Maidstone and South East Kent heard me. After giving myself a good talking to I came back and promptly got picked apart by Graham. 3-0 loss. That learned me. (Happy Graham?)
Jack Burgess is young, fit and, so some people say, moderately handsome (can't comment on that. I'm a bloke) He is also developing into a very good squash player. He and Shane had a hell of a match at No 2. With the courts being so warm the ball refused to die. This meant there were many long and painful rallies which was great to watch, but must have been hard on the players. Finally, after almost giving it away, Jack took the game in the 5th. Could have gone either way. But proved decisive for us.
Keith and J-P had a good tussle at No 4. Keith tried to put J-P off by wearing the shortest shorts I've ever seen and a squash court, and exposing as much of his legs as possible. Fortunately J-P was able to see through this ploy and kept his concentration. Both players gave the ball a good thumping but J-P was a little too quick for Keith, around the court, and was able to take the win after losing the 1st. Nice legs though, Keith.
Steve and Bob, at No 5, had a good match. Steve's greater mobility and shot placement proved too much for Bob. However, Bob did show flashes of good squash and the win was by no means as easy as the score suggests.
"Never underestimate the big man on the squash court". These words were mentioned to me by one of the Cobdown side (a good reported never reveals his sources) and they proved to be true when Alan and Ed came on to court at No 1. Two more different looking players you could not find. Ed, slim, muscular & immaculate in his all whites. Alan, big, stout and resembling a bumble bee in his black and orange attire. Win for Ed you may think. THINK AGAIN!! The bumble bee had a sting for Ed. Alan was masterful in the way he read the game and had Ed running all over the shop chasing his tail. Try as he might Ed had no answer for Alan's deep drives, superb lobs and deft drop shots. Even Alan's back wall boasts caused Ed problems. At the end Ed was spent and Alan was ready for a pint.
3-2 to Dulwich and the "P" word continues to be whispered around the Dulwich clubhouse.
Pasta bakes and chips for dinner. Functional and filling. Great club to play at and very friendly people.
