Report

Report:A bit of a family affair to start the 2nd half of the season. After ferrying his son to many of our matches, Nigel Burgess decided it would be nice to play on the same side as Jack, at least once. I decided to take the risk and allowed Nigel to play at No5. He didn't let us down gaining a point from the first game before running out of steam and losing the next 3 games to Steve from OE. I was watching Jack's reaction during the game. He played every point with his father and called him a few names on occasion, but I could tell that Jack was proud of the "Old Man".
El Capitano took on Andrew at No3. Buy his own admission Andrew only came for the beer and was keen to get off court as quickly as possible. To this end he allowed me an easy 3-0 win. Nice man. (Really, I put the boots to him and kicked his ass).
J-P was also allowed a 3-0 win by Brian at No2. It was evident from the 1st point that J-P hit the ball too hard and was a little bit more mobile. Brian gave his best but came up a little short.
As I've said, on a few occasions, Steve Hall is the most infuriating player to Captain. He's time keeping is appalling. He hates putting his hand in his pocket and if he does it takes the form of a negotiation. ("I'll pay, but I want more food then anyone else"). One thing I can't complain about is his total commitment when he is on court representing Dulwich III. His game against Nev at No4 was no exception. Nev was 8-2 up in the 1st before Steve got going. However, Steve fought back to 8-8 before losing at set one. Then Steve really began to motor taking the next two games to lead 2-1. Unfortunately the fact that Steve had played in a doubles game earlier, combined with his advanced years, contributed to his demise in the last two games. Nev played well and forced Steve to run and make errors. A slight disagreement with the marker in the 5th game at 4-4 distracted Steve and Nev was able to close out the match.
Stage set, 2-2 with the No1s to come. Jack against Bill for all the marbles. With his Mum and Dad watching from the balcony, Jack flew into an early 2-0 lead and appeared to be cruising to a win. However, he underestimated the "Braveheart" spirit of Scotsman Bill who rallied from 7-2 down in the 3rd game to win it 9-7. Jack seemed to go to sleep and lose interest. Typical teenager (he is only 17yrs). I was able to telepathically communicate my displeasure to Jack pointing out that his parents were watching, the team needed the win and that I'd shave his head bald if he lost. This produced the desired affect and Jack blitzed Bill in the 4th game to win the match for Dulwich III.
The family affair was completed when Mrs. Burgess (whom I affectionately call Mrs. Nigel) cooked a lovely meal for her men and us. (Steve had 2nds as always).
