Report: | They said it wouldn't last but we are heading into the Christmas break as unlikely leaders of the league. Who would have thought?
First up were Jim against Mr Furness and El Capitano against Julie. By all accounts Jim and Mr Furness had a close match with Jim shading it due to his always-trusty disguised backhand drop.
I had my hands full with Julie (Not that way!! Mucky minds!) She is a very good player and looked to be taking the 1st game with some excellent straight drives, which kept me, pinned at the back of the court. However, she let me off the hook with some loose drops and I was lucky to take the game 8/10. I took control in the 2nd and 3rd but Julie didn't give up and we had some very good rallies. Julie had just joined Sydenham after getting back into the game. She will be a very good addition to their team.
Jack was a bit too young and sprightly for Andrew at No3. Although Andrew possessed a fine lob service he didn't have enough to back it up and Jack came through 3-0. Ed and Sydenham Captain Kevin had a good tussle at No2.The score line doesn't reflect the closeness of the match. After taking the 1st,Ed jumped out to an 8-2 lead in the 2nd. Kevin then staged a remarkable comeback to level at 8-8 and then lead 9-8 serving for the game. Call it nerves, call it disbelief, call it what you will, but Kevin was unable to convert the game point and then lost it 10-9. That seemed to take something out of Kevin and although he battled well in the 3rd, Ed was too quick and consistent and took the game and match.
Dulwich III debutant Matt was up next against Sydenham stalwart Richard. Matt was a little slow getting started and Richard was quickly into his rhythm. Good squash, as you'd expect from the No1's. Richard nicked the 1st with some accurate drops. Matt warmed up in the 2nd and began to find his length, forcing Richard to the back and using the drop to either win the point or force an error for an easy kill. Matt used this tactic for the next three games and ran out a 3-1 winner. Richard kept going to the end and played his part in a fine match.
So the 1st half of the season is over and we lead the rest. Fine effort by our entire playing staff and hopefully we can continue, after Christmas, where we have left off and end the season top too.
