Report: | For the 7th consecutive match Bromley was involved in a close contest with a 3/2 result. On this occasion Bromley's opponents won more games, 9 to 11,but still ended up on the losing side. It's tough at the bottom.
First on court was Alan and Kevin, the no.4s. Strange match went to 5 games but none of them were at all close. Whoever won the first few points went on to win the game easily. Fortunately for Bromley, Alan won the first few points in the deciding game. As ever Kevin showed his battling qualities and vast amounts of "feverish" activity i.e red-faced, sweating profusely and rambling incoherently. Alan on the other hand was Mr Cool and for the second week running displayed all the qualities of " a perfect gentleman". But then I was marking and he knows better than to try and give me any grief.
Next game up was the no.3s, Graham and Geoff in what proved to be a keenly contested game. Geoff was clearly "up for it" as demonstrated by the whooping and hollering of elation after winning the first game. This display of passion however must have taken it all out of him though as Graham went on to take the next 3 games and the winner's "bouquet".
The next two games involving the no.1s and no.2s were shortlived affairs and the less said about them the better. Needless to say I might just as well have played in the "dark" as I could not cope, not for the first time, with Paul's pace and power. Graham fared a little better at no.1 gaining a few more points than my paltry two but also went down 3-0. Richard played a "rousing" game to win and to take the teams level at 2-2.
So to the deciding game and to Brendan's first appearance of the season having been called in at the last moment following the withdrawal of Bromley's No.1 on the morning of the match. Inevitably this game went all the way in a match which had the full gallery oohing and aahing. And that was just over the marking. Alan!!!!!
The game could have easily gone either way but Brendan was able to "galvanise" himself sufficiently to nick it at the death as his opponent sunk to his knees uttering the words "kiss me Hardy" . All good "armless" fun. |
