Report: | I gave up the chance to watch the 1st team tonight in order to travel to Wildernesse and support Dulwich III. In particular I missed the long anticipated clash between Tim Garner and Mr. Ford (Kent No1) which would be as close to a professional match as I'd get without paying.
However, if I had not gone I'd have missed another solid performance from the men from Dulwich III.
Young Jack was up 1st at No3 against the wily old vet Alan. The first game saw Alan using the freezing courts to his advantage by employing a deft drop shot at any opportunity. This served to frustrate Jack; however, he showed how much he has matured this season by storming back in the 2nd game to level at 1-1. From there Jack grew in confidence and hit the ball with great power. Alan had no reply to the barrage of powerful shots he faced. Alan rallied to make the 4th game close but Jack's youth and power were too much.
Although not a regular this season I have found Jim, at No5, always reliable and not lacking in effort or commitment. Once again he produced a good performance in beating Pete. This was by no means as easy as the score suggests. Pete came back from 6-1 down in the 1st to 5-6 before losing. He then stormed back from 5-0 down in the 2nd to level at 5-5. On both occasion Jim was able to keep his composure and win the games. The effort that Pete expended and his lack of playing time over the past 9 months showed in the 3rd game and Jim ran out the winner.
J-P had a bit too much power and placement for Andy at No4. I mentioned to J-P that, seeing as the courts were cold, he'd have to give the ball a good shellacking to get it deep. This was music to the ears of a player who likes nothing better then to spank the b'jesus out of the ball. Fortunately J-P also knows a thing or two about the game and used this to wear down Andy.
After the 1st game of their match Gareth stated that Ed was "too fit and too fast" for him. This proved to be the case in the next two games as well. However, this was the only match of the five which resembles a squash match. There were actually some rallies, which included lobs, and plenty of good shots. Gladly for us Ed won in three but at least I was able to say I'd seen some squash played.
Matt and Ian played at No1 and Ian deservedly took the first game. This match then became a study in the art of boasting. The lesson was taught by Matt and Ian chipped in with a few himself. Matt's all-round game proved too much for Ian to handle in the end and Matt sealed a 5-0 win for Dulwich.
A change of pub venue after the match was welcomed. Nice sarnies and chips. Nice folk at Wildernesse. Too bad it's so far away.
