Report

Report:With 3 matches left to the end of the season things are heating up in division 5. After losing narrowly to Bromley CC last week we were hopeful of re-establishing ourselves against a Park Langley team who we defeated earlier in the campaign. Unfortunately this was not to be. I take it as a complement that both Bromley and Park Langley fielded significantly stronger teams against us 2nd time round.
Ramsey v Turner
Young Ramsey got a shock in the 1st game, losing 9-1 due to Turner's unconventional style. However, Ramsey got to grips in the next 3 games and forced a number of errors from Jim on his way to a 3-1 win. Too young, too quick and too good.
Stephenson v Winter
Unusual to see two left-handers play each other. These two were evenly matched and hit the ball hard. The only significant difference between the two was Stephenson's more consistent play. He made fewer mistakes. The 1st two games were very close with Stephenson taking both. After losing the 2nd 10-9 J-P seemed to lose his way. and fell away in the 3rd losing it 9-1 and the match 3-0.
Boatwright v Burgess
At Dulwich Jack is considered a good prospect for the future. However, he was pitted against a young player with just as much potential. This was a good game to watch with many long rallies and fine stroke play. Both players played to a very high standard. Sadly for us Boatwright's standard was a little higher than Jack's. I have not personally witnessed Jack get beaten so badly. He was rather downbeat about it after. The test will be how he reacts to the defeat. 3-0 to Boatwright.
Stark v Davey
With the match lost it was down to Ed to try and regain some pride for Dulwich. He set about his task in earnest and took the 1st against Stark with some solid squash. Stark came back in the 2nd and jumped out to a 7-0 lead. Undeterred Ed clawed himself back into the game, saving game point at 8-4 before taking it to a tiebreak. Sensing that this was a pivotal moment Ed kept his head and took the game 10-8. That took the stuffing out of Stark who became visibly deflated in the 3rd, much like J-P was in his game, and Ed finished out the match with a 3-0 win.
Cotton v Kendall
Best match of the night. These two players put on a marvellous display worthy of the 1st team match, which was being played on the next court. Very tight 1st game in which Matt came back to level after being down early. Just lost it on the tiebreak but fired straight back and took the 2nd 9-4. Playing now with confidence, Matt raced throw the 3rd to love and I thought that we were going to get away with a 3-2 defeat. Wrong! Cotton came back into the match with some very good shots. Playing straight and deep created openings, which he was then able to exploit. Taking the 4th 9-6 meant all to play for in the last. Cotton maintained the pressure on Matt, who visibly began to tire. The more consistent stroke play of Cotton prevailed and he won 9-6 in the 5th making a 4-1 win to PK.
Three games left. All to play for. Our destiny is still in our hands but the title chase could go down to the final week. Nail biting stuff isn't it?
