Report

Report:Firstly a big thank you to David Lloyd for agreeing to host this Bromley "home" game due to the lack of court availability at Brom. Mind you given that all us "Old New Elthamians" live a damn sight nearer to David Lloyd than we do to Bromley CC it was no great hardship on our part. However our gratitude ended there and Bromley went on to record their 4th straight win of the season.

The only blot on the scorecard was at No.5 where Alan apparently seemed to think that running is not in the rules. Put the blame on his diet. Again!! So well done to Kevin who had to put up with quite a bit of stick from Alan during the course of the evening. We'll leave it at that. Spare his blushes.

I had a bit of a battle with Rob who took a 2-0 lead. In the process he attempted to spoil my good looks with a backhand crosscourt shot that ended with his racket trying to finish off what my razor started in the morning. And I didn't even get a let. After that Rob went into his shell, obviously feeling sorry for me, and I was stung into action and went on to win 3-2.

The No.2s and 3s on next and both these games were very close in the early stages and it looked at this point as if the match could go either way and I was starting to think that our unblemished record was in severe danger. I only had to go back to last season when we won our first 5 games only to turn up expectantly at David Lloyd and lose.

But as we all know there is no substitute for experience, (just as well in our case) and both Ali and Mike, with just a few years experience between them, pulled their games around and both won 3-1. John came off graciously accepting defeat. Ghurkan didn't.

So this all meant that Tony playing last could relax knowing that he didn't have to win this week. You couldn't tell though and he went about his match in his customary highly focused style. Graham on the other hand didn't look as if he fancied his chances and tried to play winners all the time - it didn't work. There were glimpses of his wickedly deceptive backhand boast and a few forehand winning drives, but it was not enough to trouble Tony who like the team has a 100% record this season
