Report: | The Bromley boys recorded their 9th win from 10 games and have now stretched their lead at the top of the league to 27 points. With Blackheath forfeiting their match last week, it has put us in a very strong position . But as the saying goes we have won nothing yet.
First on court were the no.5s and not for the first time we were treated to the Graham Lilley Jekyll & Hyde show. He was terrible in the 1st game. Brilliant in the 2nd. Terrible in the 3rd. Brilliant in the 4th, and yes you have got it - played both brilliantly and terribly in the 5th, first to go 6-2 up and then to lose 9-6. At least he got 2 points on the board for Bromley.
On the other court Geoff was knocking up on his own while Steve kept him waiting doing some altitude training - stretching and bending up on the balcony. Was he just trying to wind Geoff up I wonder. Whatever it was it worked with Steve going on to an impressive 3-0 win and to level the match.
Next on the menu was Kevin the chef and Phil(last week's rabbit) - although the dodgy toe was well wrapped up and there was no hopping about this time. The chef found it all too hot to handle, got well stuffed 3-0, and retired to the kitchen to lick his wounds and taste the food - hopefully not at the same time.
On the other court Graham as usual was sweating buckets in another seesaw match with Richard. Graham was doing his best to avenge a 3-0 defeat in their previous encounter this season and came very close to doing so. But it was not to be and at the critical stages in the 5th game despite working a number of openings he was not able to apply the finishing shot and Richard hung on to win. But again another 2 invaluable points for Bromley. So the match all square at 2-2 and the No.1s limbering up for the decider.
This match will mainly be remembered for the first 4 points - which by my reckoning took the best part of 15 minutes. Right from the off on a warm court the squash was played at a ferocious pace with long rallies, full of great retrieving and powerful hitting. At this point with the score at 2 points each we all thought that this was going to be a long night. We were wrong, the early pace had taken its toll on Paul and he suddenly stepped off the gas. Tony, quite determined not to show any sign of fatigue, still had his foot down, kept it going and rattled off the next 7 points in no time to take the first game. This continued into the 2nd game with Paul still getting his breath back and Tony thumping winners to win 9-0 and go 2 up. A big effort in the latter stages of the 3rd game saw Paul get to 6 but there was only going to be one winner and Tony brought the Bromley boys home in style again.
