Report: | The Bromley boys took another step nearer to the league title with a convincing win over David Lloyd. However I am sure Blackheath and Old Elthamians have not given up the chase and with these two providing the opposition in Bromley's next two games it is still all to play for.
Quite a few of the matches had a bit of an edge about them it seemed, with points to prove and scores to settle. First on was Steve and Dan with the young fellow ( Dan that is ) just back from Uni and playing his first game of the season. Steve still remembers their match from last summer when he was well beaten. The tables were well and truly turned this time though with Steve running out a comfortable winner. Dan was only able to show brief glimpses of his obvious ability but was clearly short of competitve match fitness and that is not the best time to come up against a player like Steve who will always make the most of an opponents shortcomings, and was quite happy to see Dan's frustration get the better of him which in the end it did. 3-0 to Steve.
On the other court Graham and Gurkan were doing battle in a strangely subdued game played at what seemed to be a very leisurely pace. Having marked the first game I was only able to see the closing stages of this one but was in time to see a couple of the famous "Straight Arm" drop shots. The halfway up the front wall variety of drop shot that is. Nonetheless Gurkan struggling at the end with a thigh strain and with some strict marking was unable to get the better of Graham. 3-2 to Straight Arm and 2-0 to Bromley and 2 not entirely expected scores.
Kevin and Alan on next with Alan under strict instructions not to "fanny" around and to get the job done, which he duly did 3-0, and sweet revenge for his ealier defeat this season to Kevin when he severely fannied ( is that how you spell it) around. So match wrapped up early for Bromley.
I went on with John next and fairly rattled through the first game moving well and playing well. It all became a bit more difficult after that with the warm court conditions suiting John's retreiving style more than mine, and I was more than a little relieved to nick it in the 4th. A 5th game would not have done my health any good whatsoever.
The last game of the evening saw Graham and Tony come up against each other for the 2nd time this season. In their first game I reported that I did not think Graham fancied his chances. This was not the case tonight. There was a little bit of jostling for position at the beginning of the match but that was just Gurkan making sure he marked the match, to return the favour as Tony had marked his game. Read into that what you will!! However Graham did not need any favours for large parts of the game and indeed came very close to winning it in the 4th. Tony however does not lie down and battled and battled to win that crucial game, indulging at the same time in the occasional "frank exchange of views" with the marker. Graham had by this time given his all and Tony was able to rapidly wrap up the 5th game and the match.
