Report: | This was an eagerly awaited match by the Bromley boys as we boast a couple of "old" Old Colfeians in our ranks, and we were also all looking forward to seeing the Adeyi brothers in action. We were therefore a little disappointed, to find that Gbenga the No.1 hadn't made the trip to Plaistow Lane preferring instead to play in a tournament in Nigeria.
This together with the absence of their regular No.3 meant that Old Colfeians turned up rather understrength. With Cannons not playing this week Bromley were in a position to knock them off the top of the league, and we were therefore in no mood to be charitable. The first 4 matches of the evening were therefore duly completed with Bromley only losing 1 game ( and yes it was me). So with Bromley 4 nil up, match won, and 17 points in the bag we settled down on the balcony to watch the No.1s.
We had obviously not seen James play before and didn't really know what to expect. We knew he had won every game this season comfortably and we had received some feedback from the other teams in the league which suggested he was some player. But I don't think anybody had told him about our No.1 or if they had James hadn't taken it in. There is only one Tony Davies, and although only playing his 2nd game this season after a hernia op, he was up for it and in no mood to be taken lightly!! James is what you might call casual on court - Tony isn't and we had in many ways two contrasting styles on court. James at first was all smiles and playing to the gallery and was not unduly concerned when Tony, all frowns and determined jaw set, took the 1st game to 7. The second game went to James 10-8, and he took the 3rd to 5 and we began to think that the boxer was getting the better of the fighter. Wrong - back came Tony and from some way behind in the 4th clawed his way back to win it also 10-8. The gallery was being treated to some fantastic squash which was so good that nobody had moved in the direction of the bar for fear of losing their place. It's fair to say though that Tony's efforts by this time had taken their toll and he was understandably tiring. James even in the 5th game still had the ability to play punishing shots with apparently little effort. Tony however pushed him all the way and made him work for every point, but James held on to to take the match, and at last let everybody get to the bar and to the dinner table.
We look forward to the return match and see how a fully fit Tony fares against the other Adeyi brother. Should be fun!! Must remember to take a copy of the SRA Rulebook though!!
