Report

Report:Another season gets underway and its good to see some new names in the league for a change. One of them being our visitors tonight, Waterfront II having risen from the ashes of Bromley Pavilion. So well done to Neil for making it happen.

No new names in our line up however, just the usual old faces, but they were good enough to see off the challenge of Murphy's boys.

First on Dwight and Alan, with Dwight more concerned with how hard he could hit he ball rather than where he was hitting it, and Alan was easily able to pick him off. 3-O to "The Table Booker" and Bromley 1-0 up. On the other court Mike was looking good winning the first two games comfortably, but then Pat had other ideas, taking the 3rd game and pushing Mike all the way in the 4th before " The Sort Of Retired One" clinched it to win 3-1 and give Bromley a 2-0 lead on the night.

All looking good I thought and an early retirement to the bar was beckoning. WRONG. Steve and Tim had other ideas and embarked on a very long hard 5 set match. This looked a bit of a mismatch really with Tim being very very tall and very very slim and Steve who.... isn't. But their contrasting styles provided for a highly entertaining game. I must admit I thought Tim had won it having taken a substantial lead in the 5th and really looking in control. But not for the first time, nor no doubt for the last time, Steve showed his true grit and battled back to win 10-8. It looks as if "The MD" is up for another successful season! In the meantime on the other court the no.1s were playing and Graham was getting a bit of a pasting from Dave, only really being in the game in the 3rd which Dave took 10-8 having won the first two easily. I would really like to give him another nickname but "Straight Arm" is hard to top.

Last on was my goodself and Archie, with me actually thinking that Steve had lost (oh ye of little faith) and that this was the deciding game and that this was not how it was supposed to be! Nonetheless this was a thoroughly enjoyable game(I would say that - I won) played in a great spirit and marked expertly by Neil - who was trying to earn his dinner. So 3-1 to the Skipper and a 4-1 win for Bromley.
