Report

Report:This was a great result for Bromley after a slightly difficult build up to the game. The week started badly with our No.2 Alastair dropping out on the Monday with a dodgy back. Attempts to find a replacement were not as easy as usual and I turned to Alan Leffen who has recently been reluctant to play due to a " lack of confidence " !!!.

Things didn't look much better when Blackheath turned up with a decidedly stronger team than the one we had played earlier in the season. Their No.1 in the first match was down to play No.4 this time, and down to play me!!! All I needed!!

The match itself started badly, with Bromley losing the first two games. Graham went on first with Chris in a repeat pairing of the previous fixture. Unfortunately the result was also a repeat. 3-0 again to Chris who is definately not on Graham's Xmas card list. At the same time I was playing Dave and surprised myself (and others no doubt) by sharing the first 4 games with him. Then the legs gave out and Dave won the 5th comfortably enough. And as if that wasn't bad enough Dave then strolled off with a lovely young girl on his arm, while I went upstairs to read the rule book before marking Tony Davies. Who said life is unfair!!

So Bromley 2-0 down. But cometh the hour, cometh the man. In the shape of Alan Leffen. Was it a bird, was it a plane. No...etc etc. What can I say, I don't think Alex knew what hit him as Alan rattled off 3 games in impressive style and Bromley were back in it. Innit.

On the other court Mike and Will looked pretty evenly matched and duly shared the first two games. I was otherwise engaged with the match on the other court and didn't see a great deal of this game but the cries of anguish coming mainly from Will told their own story and Mike came through to win 3-1 and bring the overall match score level.

So over to Tony to wrap things up for us which he did in great style 3-0 against Tom, and I didn't even have to refer to the rule book once. Only joking - I wouldn't know what a rule book was if it jumped up and bit me. Who needs rules anyway - we've got Leffen.

Man of the Match....unquestionably Alan Leffen the confidence trickster.
