Report: | A really bad day at the office for the Bromley team which has put a bit of a dent in our promotion hopes. Two players badly underperforming and one struggling with a bad back led to a 3-2 defeat against a team against whom, in my memory, we had never previously lost. Only Tony and Steve played up to their normal standard and duly recorded comfortable wins.
Alastair was from the opening stages of his match struggling with his back and was clearly not moving at all well. Nonetheless it was a creditable effort to take his match to 5 games and to gain valuable points for the team. Lets hope his week in the Canarian sun speeds up his return to full fitness as we will need him. Steve on the other court started brightly taking the 1st game with ease. The second went a bit pear shaped with Steve trying too hard to force the issue. A few choice words after that game from Graham and Tony off court put him back on track and as the scores show the 3rd and 4th games were more than comfortable.
I then went on with Cobus and in the blink of an eye was two games down having picked up a mere 3 points. Again a few choice words off court were offered which seemed to work as I won the next game to love. However I went back to sleep in the 4th and it was game over. Graham on the other court was having a total nightmare against Alan whose serve and drop tactic can cause havoc at the best of times. However on cold courts, made even colder by "heaters" blowing out cold air, such tactics are even more painful. Graham like Graham Lilley before him some months ago will take a long time to forget such a defeat against Alan.
So victory for Sydenham and not much to play for, other than pride, for the No.1s. Paul has played Tony a few times now but is I suspect beginning to think that this is a bridge too far. Paul as ever was all effort and heart but at times seemed to have a bit of a resigned look about him as he continually chased balls into the four corners of the court. A couple of immaculate winning drops by Tony with Paul still recovering from yet more desperate retrieving from the back corner, were followed by the rather unkind comment "C'mon Paul you gotta keep running". That's Tony for you.
Oh well back to the drawing board and try to get back to winning ways next week.
