Report

Report:If nothing else this match proved what a close division this is going to be this season. If we thought that Hartley, without a win so far, were going to be easy pickings we were quite wrong and it took the 5th game of the last match of the evening to decide the outcome in Bromley's favour.

First on were the two captains playing at no.4. If it had been a film it would it have been X rated. A bit of a horror show with plenty of bad language thrown in. Neither Steve or I set much in the way of a captain's example with very few rallies, lots of mistakes and an abundance of frustration on show. I was simply glad to get off court at the end with a 3-1 win on the card.

At least the no.5s, Graham and Nigel, were playing some proper squash on the other court with Graham looking relatively comfortable having won the 1st game. Nigel however was starting to read Graham's game more and more and by the middle of the 2nd game was virtually anticipating every shot. As a result he was able to start picking off some easy winners and it seemed the harder Graham tried the easier it became for Nigel who went on to record an impressive 3-1 win.

Some quality shots were on display with the no.3s on court. Mike and Martin started off very evenly and the 1st game eventually went 10-8 in Martin's favour. Mike seemed a little subdued in this game if not a little unsettled by Martin's combatative demeanour not to mention his powerful driving and volleying. Ultimately though he was the architect of his own downfall as he was continually let down by his short game, normally his strength, and failing to finish off rallies after getting into good positions. 3-0 to Martin.

Nothing subdued about the no.3s game with a lively affair involving Steve and Greg. Steve as usual had turned up saying he really didn't feel like playing after another cr*p day at work. As usual Steve got on court and turned in another highly focused display against a young energetic opponent. It did however require a significant change in tactic at 2-1 down before Steve really got to grips with the match and ran out with a vital 3/2 win to level the match.

It was left, as it should be, to the no.1s to play out the final and deciding match. Alastair as ever was playing quite tidily but without producing too many fireworks but in fairly short space of time found himself 2 games up and matchball at 8-2 up in the third game. By this stage the Bromley boys on the balcony were feeling quite relaxed and looking forward to dinner and a couple of beers to celebrate the win. Big Sean however had a different idea and finally decided to get his ar*e in gear. He stormed back to win the 3rd game and fairly rattled off the 4th to make it 2 games all and to bring back the frowns to the Bromley faces.Alastair however has been here before (many times) and continued to play his normal steady tight game and the mistakes that had littered Sean's game in the early stages returned. So it was the genial Scot who claimed the victory for the team and which has now pushed Bromley up to 2nd place.

Its a shame though that you don't get extra points for marking. I reckon we would be top of the league by now as this was the second week running where Bromley supplied the markers for all 5 games!!
