Report

Report:The dart-punctured picture of the 2nd team skipper that adorns the 3rd team changing room following pre-season comments over a beer at the PL bar, almost brought the underdogs a victory in this highly engaging and enjoyable encounter.

The matches got underway with Mike vs Mark and Andy vs Trev. Your author was scoring the first game but even he could feel the tension as the number 3s battled on the court next door. The game swung one way then the other with some tight games and very competitive high quality shot-making. In the end Andy’s 4 back to back points in the middle of the 5th proved decisive the match went the PL2.

Meanwhile the fives traded a succession of impressive winners, with Mike showing a slightly more clinical killer-edge in the first 2 to take a lead in what would surely be a 3-0 victory. Mark was not to be beaten so easily however and attacked strongly in the 3rd to take it with a plethora of drops and boasts. Mike however turned things around in the fourth and although it was close, did appear to always be in control.

Next up was the No.1s and 4s. Although Kevin started off strongly in the first game Trevor battled back well and at 7-5 appeared likely to take the first. A couple of unfortunate tins at the wrong time brought the Adonis-esque McCaughan back into the game and he took advantage to claim the first. Buoyed by this he pushed on in the second. Trevor battled well in the third to claim the game with a subtle change of tactics, which his opponent initially struggled to adapt to. As the fourth game started it appeared likely to end up a 5setter, but a succession of short winners brought victory for the PL3 number 1 as his opponent struggled to get forward.

Meanwhile on the other court the increasingly notorious “Collins dink” was claiming an impressive scalp. The first four games saw a variety of winners and good lengths and the match was obviously pulsating as the spectators gave the no. ones only a cursory glance before re-attaching their attention to Mike and Andy. As the players came off after the fourth all was square although Mike appear to be in slightly better shape – this was evident as he took a commanding lead into the final game and pushed on to leave the match a 2-2.

The final game pitting Gerald against Simon, was like all the games before, a close encounter. Simon’s shot selection ultimately provided decisive as he was able to play the right shot more often to clinch these very close games. Gerald can feel unlucky to not have taken the game to a fifth and if he can keep the ball a bit deeper in the return fixture he can look forward to perhaps getting a little more out of the game next time around.

Overall a very close, battling display from both teams and as is to be expected the night finished with loud and noisy discussion at the bar, reaching a fevered crescendo when the PL3 captain walked in………

Cheers to all!
